Guest post: Deep breath

There are times when breathing isn’t particularly easy.

The world can take one’s breath away through the beauty of a vista, the thrill of an achievement, or the fear of what may come.

Sometimes we can’t breathe for laughing. Those are the best times.

Ups and downs, joys and sorrows can all leave us gasping, panting, fighting desperately for breath. Or, allergies. Worse, asthma. Sleep apnea is another breathing issue that is getting a lot of attention these days.

Luckily for people with asthma and allergies, there are medications and treatments that help. And, believe me when I tell you that there is a zero percent chance of overstating the magic that is a C-PAP.

Breathing reminds me of one day when my uncle, visiting from Texas, starting wandering oddly around our living room. First, we had to figure out what the heck he was doing (he is a bit young for senility to be settling in). Next, we had to understand what the peculiar noise was that he was so actively trying to pinpoint. At last, we solved the mystery! Our cat Panther was snoring.

Well, Panther was sort of snoring.  Panther was kind of wheezing in away we have long since grown accustomed to, because Panther does not breathe well when he sleeps. He needs a kitty C-PAP.

Such a thing probably will never exist. It’s a shame, because animals often need help with breathing too. Just ask our Sophia.

The beautiful, fluffy poofball of the lobby knows from troubled breathing. What’s wonderful is the way she takes it in stride. Not one to complain, Miss Sophia will never tell anyone about her issues. But, she does seem to enjoy her special nebulizing treatments (spa day, every day!).

For a few minutes as proscribed and well-scheduled, Sophia sits in her carrier with her little humidifier, and she gets to relax and breathe.

I don’t know how Sophia passes the time when she’s breathing. Maybe she meditates. It could be that she just naps.

Or maybe, just maybe, Sophia takes a really deep breath and settles in to work on her plans to take over the world.
