Sometimes 28 days can feel like the longest month of the year.
This was no ordinary February.
This was the kind of February that makes grocery stores display 15′ towers of Mallomars.*
This was the kind of February that makes radio stations play songs like Heatwave and that great symphonic masterpiece Hot, Hot, Hot! to mock and/or encourage us.
This was the kind of February that finds you shivering in the dairy aisle with your last nerve frozen off, wondering, am I too old to buy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles GoGurt?
These were the times that tried our souls.
But amidst all that ice and cold and Mallomar shame, this was also an extraordinary February for cats. This was the kind of February in which this happened:
Arrived: Wolfie, KikiLola (aka Kiki, aka Lola), Boris, Jack, Henrietta, Casper
Adopted: Macklemore, Kaya, Eli, Phoenix, Helga, Nigella, Ruby,** Natasha,*** Frosty
Returned: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ONE (bellowed like Gandalf, a la “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!“)
Banished to Ringworm: Mystique (still), Ryan Lewis, Mario
Cleared from Quarantine: Ursula, Sly, Alaric, Sneakers, Eve
Promoted to the Community Room: Chrissy, Alaric
Promoted to the Lobby: Angel
And so, kittens, take heart. Although the snow looks like burnt marshmallows today, Lucky Charms are coming. Should you need a hint of joy’s return, our cats are ever eager to shower and flower you with unstoppable life.
*For reals. I almost took a photo for you.
**Yes, that Ruby.
***Yes, that Natasha. Snow or no, February was cool for cats.

I guess that there is someone in the world, besides Levi’s adopter, that has a place in their heart and home for a gentle, old, blind cat.
Be well, Ruby. May the rest of your days be happily spent in that new, loving (and heated) home.
Yay February! Natasha and Ruby adopted – how wonderful for both senior lady cats. And I can’t wait to meet the newbies. Thank you Angela, wonderful epilogue.
I love the people who adopted Ruby, even though I have no idea who they are! They have been blessed with tender souls land are in for such a treat with this wonderful cat.
I, too, have a cat which was named Mystique by the shelter (One By One Cat Rescue of Kutztown, PA), and she is not friendly with other cats. Misty (I kept her name) is a beautiful, sleek black cat with a white locket spot under her neck. However, she can be a grouch! When she’s being grouchy, I call her “Mistake”! 😉
If she’s really being a grouch, I yell, “Mystique Patricia!” I kept the Misty for a Navy lady that I used to know at Willow Grove Naval Air Station, and Patricia is after my mom. Both Misty and my mom’s birthdays are May 1.
