My first high school boyfriend declared that “our song” would be none other than Chumbawumba’s Tubthumping. Yes, the ditty with deeply romantic lyrics like “He drinks a whiskey drink, he drinks a vodka drink, he drinks a lager drink, he drinks a cider drink.”
I should have known that relationship wasn’t meant to last. But today, I’m happy to hand that song over to the cat who owns its best line: “I get knocked down, but I get up again. You’re never gonna keep me down.”
It’s been a wonderweek for Sam and the New Yorkers. Today the unsinkable, un-knock-downable Kim is living life loved by her own family.
Tell me true: if you (a) were homeless on the New York City streets, (b) sustained a terrible injury to one of your legs, and (c) had to trudge on for years with no treatment (or even Tylenol) for that injury, before landing in a place that most creatures don’t leave alive…would you be a happy-go-lucky sprite?
Me neither. I want to believe I could get through all of that with some hope intact…but I’m no Kim.
As you’ll recall, Kim endured all of the above. But something about her made the NYCAC&C folks pick her for the freedom ride to Tabby’s Place. And that’s when we learned that she’s a cat of uncommon courage.
Mangled leg and lonely years be darned: Kim was not going to stop shining for a second. If cats can smile, Kim beamed – continually. And, as if to demonstrate that her fractured front leg was no great shakes, she would race up and down the ramp in Suite B, smacking toys (and the occasional cat in her way) with her big, many-toed paw, and all without a hint of pain. Or bitterness.
There was no chip to be found on this little tuxedo shoulder. So there were no gasps of surprise when Kim was adopted: the only surprise was that it had taken this long.
With Kim’s brave, forward-looking heart, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s already forgotten Tabby’s Place. As for New York, that’s ancient history. This girl is all about her stellar future.
How does Kim’s new family feel about her? Well, there’s “like,” there’s “love,” there’s “infatuation,” and then there’s “the way these folks feel
about Kim.”
Truly.
Deeply.
Madly in love. Nothing can ever keep Kim down now.
And I’m happy to thump all the tubs in town to spread this happy news.
I’m tickled pink for little Kim. What a brave girl. She deserves all the happiness in the world, and I’m sure she’s getting just that with her new family. 🙂
So happy for Kin! She’s a sweetie 🙂 However, I now have that song stuck in my head and I fear it will remain there all day!

Best of luck to Kim and her new family and forever home. Angela, you said that she has probably forgotten Tabby’s Place by now, I believe that any cat whose life you people have touched will never truly forget you.
What a sweetheart to go through all that and still be her same sweet, loving self. Congrats to Kim and her new family. I always love such a happy ending and so glad it worked out for them!
