Guest post: The happy continues

All too easily, we can find ourselves following the white rabbit down into a warren of wallowing, worry, and woe. Not exactly wonderful. Not unreasonable or unseasonable, given the current times. But, also not the whole story. There’s always something fabulous and fun. There is always joy to be found, and come what may…

THE HAPPY CONTINUES!!

Through the cold chill of January and stormy, flip-floppy February, goodness abounds, and I don’t mean that just because Russell Stover chocolate-covered caramel hearts are readily attainable for their brief, annual season. There are hot cups of cocoa and fireplaces. There are cozy, quiet mornings when the air is crisp outside, but it’s warm and toasty inside. While we warm our hands…

THE HAPPY CONTINUES!!

I am quite insistent on this point. You see, I have it on good authority that a Tabby’s Place cat whom I ADORE is on hold for adoption (saying no more, because life happens, and things happen, and I am not going to somehow bad-vibe this into not happening. Not a chance). There is nothing better on this earth than knowing that someone beloved is getting all the goodness they deserve. As we cheer them on…

THE HAPPY CONTINUES!!!

A lapful of Carrot is a shared joy

More than goodness bounds around inside the Special Needs suite in the form of FeLV+ kittens who know only that shoelaces are made to be untied (until the owner of said shoelaces exasperatedly tucks them into her ankle boots), that sinks are a wellspring of thrills and adventure (and one very wet toy mouse; ew), and that other kittens’ tails are the best toys ever. As we watch them rollick, we laugh out loud and…

THE HAPPY CONTINUES!!!

In suite C resides one white and orange lovable, snuggly Carrot-Cake. Carrot climbs on laps even on the windiest days, giving and getting warmth in all the ways. The love of a Carrot is like no other. The love of a cat is infinite proof that…

THE HAPPY CONTINUES!!!

And, at last, we arrive in the company of one Wonton Rosenberg, resident of suite A, although he could be on the cover of every single issue of Kitty GQ. Wonton is a shy dumpling — painfully shy. Bearer of the zazziest, most eye-catching swirls all over, Wonton curls up and cowers from human attention…until he doesn’t, well, not exactly.

Feigning bravery and disinterest, Wonton hides his true beauty

I’ve been working with Wonton since the before times. The pandemic caused a bit of a backslide in his socializing with humans (Wonton is just fine with other cats, especially Steven). But, lately, he and I have been making good strides. Fairly recently, Wonton discovered ear rubs – you know, those deep, good ear rubs that a cat rolls into as if there is never getting enough rubs. Wonton may have surprised himself. He certainly surprised me. With this kind of surprise, we are assured that…

THE HAPPY CONTINUES!!!

A shy cat rolling into ear rubs is exactly the kind of happy that keeps us coming back for more. There will be steps backward. But, the trajectory is forward.

It’s kind of like winter in New Jersey. We’ll get bitterly cold days, sometimes with snow and ice (ice is THE WORST, especially when there is snow on top of ice. UGH!) and wind chills that fall well below tolerable. Balancing that out, we’ll get mild, spring-like days that cloak us in warm sunshine and freshening breezes. We also get Russell Stover chocolate-covered caramel hearts (she just keeps going on about those candies EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Egads!). We make it through every single year, so we know that no matter what deep winter brings, it will once again be spring and…

THE HAPPY CONTINUES!!!

No matter where we are, no matter the weather, no matter the temptation that draws us in and entices us to follow any manner of white rabbits down or through or beyond any rabbit hole or warren or maze, the happy continues. Now matter how down in the mouth, how cold or discontented our winter may be, the happy continues.

If you aren’t convinced, if the woe is too woeful and the ways of wonder are too far out of your grasp, fear not. The happy truly does continue. Just pet that kitty on your lap and listen for the purr. That’s all the evidence you really need to know that the happy ever and always continues.
