I have a 10-year-old Scion xB. Because Scion was a subsidiary of Toyota, a Japanese company, and because Godzilla is a Japanese invention, and because Godzilla had a son, and because I am who I am, and because my husband knows all of that, my xB is named Godzuki.
I am writing this blog a day after Dorothy Day‘s birthday, and I’m wondering something she wouldn’t want me to wonder. Is it safe to hope?
Secret: I am incapable of cleaning the house without the assistance of boy bands, ranging from One Direction to The Grateful Dead. Not so secret: there are days when cleaning the house is exactly the soul-balm we need, and days when cleaning the house would be nearly a sin.
What shall we say of you, October 2020? How would you like to be remembered?
There’s a new show called “Connecting.” It’s about friends that are a family, who visit virtually in a variety of ways, and it’s set during now, or at least the extremely recent past. The pandemic, social distancing, excessive togetherness, and extreme aloneness are all addressed. So is online shopping.
Thanks to some very special volunteers — one who particularly entertains us with photos, commentary, and “competitions” — we are often reminded of the grand delights to be found in something as simple as a stroll outdoors. Except…
Today is a day. But no matter what they tell you, today is not “the” day that defines all days.
