Bake shop of endless delights: Twinkie-Cupcake update

Twinkie & CupcakeI think it’s fair to say that we love every single adopter who joins the Tabby’s Place family.

But I confess I have a soft spot the size of Mongolia for those adopters who send letters “home” from their alumni. So it is with great delight that I share the latest from none other than Mrs. TwinkieCupcake herself.

I do believe Trifle and Strudel will join us in happy-dancing over this update. Mrs. TC, take it away.

Cupcake & Twinkie in their forever home“Tomorrow is the 5 month anniversary of me bringing Cupcake and Twinkie home, so I wanted to touch base and give you an update. …

Cupcake has made the most amazing progress. My April flower. … Cupcake let me cut the mats out of her back. She is playing a LOT more and loves dangly toys like the fishing poles. She spends a lot of time ON the bed rather than under it, and sometimes even spends the night along with Twinkie at the foot of the bed. She lets me pet her and brush her, and since she’s playing, I think she’s lost a little weight.

… Twinkie is still Twinkie–but I love her just the same. I don’t know what it’s going to take to earn her trust so that I can touch her. I can touch her briefly, but then she lifts a paw and swats me. No way would I hit her back. I can still rub noses with her sometimes, and she will take a treat out of my hand.

TwinkieShe’s still a play machine and is definitely the alpha, butting in when Cupcake is playing and jumping on her and biting her neck. Luckily, I have two arms to keep two toys going at once.

I pray that Twinkie comes around, but at the same time I am estatic that Cupcake has. They still curl up together and some of the poses they get themselves into are x-rated LOL. …

I contacted my vet about giving them valium in order to catch them to put them in the carriers. I’m hoping to make a visit to him some time in May for a checkup and baseline blood work. He agreed the valium was a good idea. I picked it up last week so I could do a dry run. He told me to crush a pill (I got a pill crusher) and mix it in their food about an hour before I wanted to catch them.

CupcakeSaturday morning I did just that. I watched them carefully to make sure they ate all the food and didn’t eat out of each other’s bowls. Then we played, and played, and played waiting for the valium to take effect.

After about an hour, Cupcake got wobbly, and after two tries I was able to catch her with a towel. She wasn’t happy, but she let me clip all her nails!!!!! I did get scratched a few times though. She isn’t as heavy as she looks. It was a delight to hold her. I hadn’t held a cat since Sugar died 5 months ago today.

The valium dose never slowed Twinkie down. … She’s like a greased pig. I just could not catch her. Naturally I’m disappointed because I have to be able to catch her to get her to the vet. I even went online and did some searching, and ordered a net on an aluminum pole that is used for catching chickens. I thought if I could trap her with that, I could then use a towel to get her into the carrier.

So you can be assured I won’t be returning Twinkie because I can’t catch her to do so. That’s a joke. I’m keeping her of course.

TwinkieI would love to brush their teeth, clean their ears and keep their nails trimmed, but right now that doesn’t look like a possibilty. Hopefully things will get better. I thought for sure they’d be mad at me and hide after Saturday morning, but they haven’t, thankfully.

Mad at you, Mrs. TwinkieCupcake? Their beloved mama? Not in ten jillion years.

  1. Thank you so much for Mrs. TwinkieCupcake’s patience! These furry girls don’t know how lucky they are! They’ll both come around in their own time. Glad to see they’re doing so well and have someone on their side, who loves them as they are!

  2. I am so glad to see Twinkie and Cupcake again! I miss them but I am thrilled that they are doing so well. I have to laugh at the description of Twinkie as a greased pig! I thought the same thought many times when I was socializing her. (I’m not at all surprised that Valium doesn’t work for her!) What a wonderful life these two girls have! They deserve it after all that they’ve been through.

  3. YAY!!! Another Tabby’s Place success story and another awesome adopter who understands to let the cats come around in their own time!
