It’s summer.
Kittens smaller than mozzarella sticks are melting our hearts. Cats of all sizes are processing the trauma of seeing humans in shorts.
And the humid, hairy, heartbreaking world is stripping us all down to honesty.

Tabby’s Place people are feely beings. This is one of the best things about us, up there with our ability to forgive and our prowess at grilling vegan frankfurters until they smell 80% less like flatulence.
But these are difficult times for feely beings.
The newspaper prints the latest howls next to sales on pool noodles. Neighbors forget neighbors, and fear makes us forget our own names. Bologna is recalled for having unreported “source materials.” (You have no idea how much I wish I was making that up.)

Nobody can agree on anything, except that everything seems upside-down. Any given hour can feel like the hinge of history, but we still have to fold the laundry.
And maybe that is just the thing to save us.
If we are going to mend the world, it is going to happen in kitchens and laundry rooms. We are going to do the next right thing, one thing at a time. No one is better equipped to pull love from the ditch than feely beings like you and me. No one can drag down when we stand for someone smaller than ourselves.
(And no one is going to convince the cats that they are “smaller” than us. But they will let us believe this.)
So, if your heart is thrumming like a hummingbird, take shelter at Tabby’s Place. We are as fragile as all humans, but love hoists us on its shoulders. We can’t pronounce the word “impossible.” We save cats from hopeless situations. We get saved from hopeless situations.

Deflated kittens turn fat and proud as plums.
Shunned seniors become five-pound celebrities.
The deaf hear their names, and the blind step into the light.
We may not forget the world outside, but we can remember why we were given all these feelings in the first place.
And we can remember what love can do in one humble month, like June:

Yes, kittens, it is summer, when nothing stays frozen.
And if we are brave enough, our soft, feely hearts may yet save the world.
I’m really going to miss Nelson…but so glad he’s in a home (even if it isn’t mine)!
