There is something about cats that lend them to food-rich comparisons. Their repetitions of “nom nom” when slurping up squeeze treats does nothing for limiting analogies to sugary and savory human treats, herbs, and spices. Thusly, while giving a luscious tour to two delightful donors, who shall be called JD, the conversation took a delectable detour. Having covered the basis of the building, the heavenliness of the haven, and the sanctity of the sanctuary, talk turned to specific cats. JD and I delved deeply into the tasty delights that are the cats of Tabby’s Place.
As regular readers know, some cats are sweeter than toasted marshmallows. There are those that push the limits and are as molasses-y and sticky as overcooked caramel. Mind you, cats are never cloying (Clawing is a different issue for a different time.). It’s just that it can be difficult to unstick oneself from the sweetness of a cat like Shelly. During JD’s tour, as every week since the first week, a particular volunteer was glued to the floor by this tiny tortie. Shelly is unable to gaze lovingly upon her friend. Even so, her affection for the attention oozes out like the middle of a molten lava cake. An absolutely scrumptious view to behold!

Across the hall and down a bit of a ways, Lornadoone is the flip side of the pancake (You were expecting “coin,” right?). While it would not be accurate to say that Lornadoone is saltier than the Bonneville Salt Flats, she is definitely on the more savory side of the pantry. Lets just say that she is less buttery shortbread and more everything flatbread cracker. Lornadoone has her honeyed moments, though. As a cat who bears the orange collar of warning and unpredictability, the observer is most likely to bear witness her sweetness from the far side of the door and, most often, while her adored office-mate and Behavior Team lead spoils this crispy cookie with treats.
Although cats like Shelly and Lornadoone help define the farther ends of the palate, some of the cats have a more balanced flavor. Brownie, for one, is aptly named and colored. His rich dark coat is reminiscent of a triple dark chocolate version of his namesake confection. As with the very best of bakery brownies, this Brownie has a delightful mix of textures running from ooey-gooey goodness to a deeper chew (No, not on you. Not with his teeth.) that is worth sinking one’s own teeth into (No, not literally!).

Getting to know Brownie is to learn that his richness is enhanced by the lightest touch of salt. Hey, any diabetic senior kitty gets a pass for not always wanting too much attention all at once. But, Brownie never holds a grudge. He loves to see his friends, spend time with them, and sleep…a lot…on something flat, but not at, on, or near a salt flat. Something suitable in the community room will do nicely.
Overall, the tour with JD was a fresh reminder of just how perfectly delicious it is to spend time with all of the Tabby’s Place cats. They are all amazing beings representing a wide variety of tastes. From Shelly, to Lornadoone, over to Brownie and beyond, treats await every staff member, volunteer, and visitor.
If you are looking for the right temptation, start by answering a few questions. The Adoptions Team will help you make a match that is more perfect than your favorite treat.
