Update for Kitten Fund

Dear Kitten Fund Sponsors,

Well, I think it’s safe to say that March didn’t go exactly as anyone had planned. Pandemics do tend to put a kink in the best-laid plans. From overwhelmed hospitals to shuttered businesses to stay at home orders, it’s been a turbulent and often disheartening few weeks.

However, we here at Tabby’s Place have at least one piece of good news: We have a wonderful bunch of little kitties who are bursting with love and energy!

Periwinkle enjoys the sunshine (and treats!)

Periwinkle is still a petite little beauty with a big personality. We were initially worried that the lack of volunteers in the sanctuary due to COVID-19 might make her backtrack on her socialization progress, but she continues to do well. She and I have even become tentative friends—as long as I am offering “the good stuff”—A.K.A. catnip and treats. When she’s in the mood for some pets, she loves head scratches and can be very sweet. She usually is also one of the first cats to greet us if we walk in the Community Room around mealtimes. She may not show it in her size, but she loves to eat! (If only I could have a metabolism like that!)

The Aftermath of Snippers and a very Innocent Suzie

Snippers is also doing wonderfully. She has been moved back to the Feral Room so she has more room to romp and play and also has some new feline friends. Suzie, Sanfour, Katie, and Gretchen have also moved to the Feral Room for the time being, while we have no feral kitties housed there. Katie and Gretchen are previous TNR’s and Sanfour is a young cat from a rescue in Lebanon. Snippers is delighted about all the company, although the others don’t always share in her enthusiasm. She can be a bit rowdy for them, but they still tolerate her parlour moves and crazy antics.

Although Suzie and Snippers share the same adorable black-and-white looks, they are fairly opposite in personality. Whereas Snippers is a pure ball of chaotic energy, Suzie is calm, cool, and collected. Suzie was moved to Suite B last month but unfortunately came down with a bad case of ulcers in her mouth. She quickly recovered, but it was clear that she wasn’t entirely happy in B, so she joined Snippers. We are hoping that, with a good bit of love, Suzie will become a little more comfortable and confident, as she is on the shy side.

Figaro (grey and white) and Circe (tabby and white) love to play!

Figaro and Circe, our Puerto Rican fur babies, have finally been freed from Ringworm and they could not be happier! The pair are currently wreaking havoc in Suite B and are two little bundles of energy. They enjoy playing with the other cats, especially Finn, a young cat from a rescue in Dallas, Texas. Figaro is dealing with some skin issues around his face at the moment, but we are hoping his current medication regimen will solve that. Other than that, the two are doing wonderfully and are very sweet.

Veronica is also a newbie in Suite B. She came from a colony of cats living outside of a youth correctional facility, but she was deemed too sweet to put back outside. We are glad that we kept her and six other of her colony buddies. She was previously in foster with her friend Maricruz, and the two have adjusted well to life together in one of our suites. Veronica is a tiny little thing and loves to snuggle up with the other cats. She also enjoys playing with Finn, Figaro, and Circe.

Beautiful and Sweet Veronica

The Fantastic No-Eyed Wonder Mr. Beatty is currently on hold for adoption! He has been an absolute pleasure to have in our Community Room. He has discovered a love of catnip and getting in everyone’s personal space. He is a cuddly, sweet, and very playful little boy. Unfortunately, before he could get the chance to go home, we noticed that he was limping. An exam and X-ray showed that he has bilateral luxating patellas. We were hoping that he would not need surgery to correct this condition, but he has been limping most days, so we are leaning towards surgery. He will have a consultation soon. Nonetheless, he remains happy and spirited and doesn’t seem to be in any pain.

On a sad note, we, unfortunately, lost Beatty’s brother, Bing. As noted in the last update, Bing likely had FIP. Shortly after I last wrote, Bing declined and had a seizure. He let us know that it was time for him to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Luckily, he was able to spend some last few moments with his foster mother from North Carolina, who had driven up to visit him. He passed away surrounded by a circle of love.

Tipsy cuddling with Tux

Tipsy continues to be a loveable little rolly-polly. He loves attention and will wriggle around on his back as soon as he sees someone, asking for pets and belly rubs. He is incredibly sweet and charming. On sunny days, he enjoys sitting by the window with Tux, soaking in the sun’s rays and warmth.

Newbies Sasha and Sabrina came to us midway through last month. Sabrina is a tiny tabby with white and Sasha is a sassy calico. Whereas Sabrina always comes to greet visitors, Sasha loves to find a corner and growl and hiss. Don’t let Sabrina’s hardy exterior scare you away, however! She pretends to be a tough cookie but, once you start petting her, she suddenly realizes that she actually loves attention! These two are currently residing in the old kitten room with mates Sketch and Judy (both from Kuwait). The four are all lovely young ladies who get along wonderfully.

Sassy Sasha pretends to be tough but melts when given some head scratches

Due to COVID-19, we are currently closed to the public and volunteers. This means, for the time being, no adoptions. We know that many of the cats we have will quickly find homes once we can host potential adopters once again. For now, however, they will continue to drive us a little crazy but throwing toys in water bowls, getting litter everywhere, and tearing up paper.

Thank you all for continuing to support the Kitten Fund and Tabby’s Place. Without sponsors like you, we would not have the capacity to save so many of these wonderful little guys. Your support is especially needed and appreciated during difficult times such as these.
