Tommy doesn’t need that

Tommy doesn’t need that

Tommy heard you were worried about him.

Tommy heard you felt sorry for him.

Tommy wants you to know something.

Tommy doesn’t need that.

Tommy DOES need to hold Bandit’s hand in the solarium tube.

It’s 2026, and Tommy is parting ways with everything that doesn’t serve him.

No, really: if you’re not wearing a paper hat and serving a bucket of popcorn shrimp, Tommy can’t let you in.

Of course, Tommy is kidding. About the paper hat, anyway. You don’t need that.

You do need to listen to Tommy, for he has learned by living.

In the shadow of the Liberty Bell, a stray cat is free to explore. With nobody expecting him home for dinner, the Philadelphia feral could stay late at Love Park, or investigate what happens to food truck cheesesteaks that don’t reach their destiny.

Known by no one, he did not even have to answer to a name.

Tommy DOES need to wear sunbeams.

But that kind of freedom comes at a cost. It is hard to hear the voice of love when city sirens pierce your attempts to purr, and asphalt etches scars into your toes.

You can go where you please, at the price of going alone.

Tommy doesn’t need that.

Life is always speaking, but pain plugs in an amplifier. Tommy was not looking for trouble. But an ordinary day went terribly wrong, leaving him with a fractured left foreleg and wounds on his tail.

Tommy DOES need warm daisy blankets.

Like it or not, he had never been so needy.

There was no way Tommy would survive alone. “Independence” was no longer on speaking terms with “life.”

This was the exam for which no cat prepares. He thought all he needed was “to need nobody.”

But Tommy doesn’t need that.

In Tommy’s desperate hour, life lassoed some angels. They were a blur of wings and determination. One whisked the shattered stray from the street and into a shelter. One named him “Tommy.” Others ignored the red cage tags that flagged him as “hard to handle.”

Tommy DOES need to gaze at you, wonderstruck that you exist.

Kindness chipped away at his icy independence.

Fear is always more fragile than it seems.

As pain medication took the edge off his agony, Tommy had to admit: chin skritches taste better than cheesesteak, whatever cheesesteak tastes like.

But a crowded city shelter doesn’t need one more stray, especially one who won’t survive without surgery.

Tommy DOES need to be so adorable, he exceeds all legal limits of lovableness.

Tommy’s only hope was a sanctuary where “needy” is just another word for “alive,” and the broken are crowned with belonging.

Tommy got excited at the thought that this involved a Burger King crown, but Tommy doesn’t technically need that.

Tommy needed Tabby’s Place.

Tommy needed the Linda Fund.

And Tabby’s Place needed Tommy.

Tabby’s Place needed Tommy so badly, staff member Carolyn personally made the trip to rescue him (together with fellow Philly shelter sweeties Merv and Annette).

Tommy DOES need to dream, both waking and sleeping.

Now, Tommy was ours, and Tommy was yours, and we were all his.

The day you belong to a person or cat, everything changes.

You lose your “freedom” from having someone check on you. You waive the right to dodge being doted on. You surrender the option of a life in which nobody brings you Batman blankets fresh from the dryer. You cannot escape little songs about your nose.

You can’t get back the life untied to other lives, the heart that was loose but lonely.

Tommy doesn’t need that.

As for Tommy’s left front leg, well, you already know what our little grey cat would say about that. Tabby’s Place legends as luminous as Trent have demonstrated the dignity of hopping.

Tommy DOES need the adventure of being alive.

There is no shame at a sanctuary where everyone is missing some piece or another (and then there are the cats).

No one here can make it on their own.

Nobody gets to keep the illusion that they live for themselves.

But somebody — or rather, two spectacular somebodies — get to keep our three-legged Tommy.

That’s right. Our timid boy has just been adopted, by two of the most devoted angels in the Tabby’s Place family.

For the rest of his days, Tommy can never go back to being lonely.

Tommy doesn’t need that.

Cats like Tommy do need you. And, now through 9/30, your gift to the Linda Fund will be doubled to provide the kind of surgery that saved Tommy’s life. Please give from your heart today. You are greatly needed.
