Update for Luna

Dear Team Luna,

Can you believe it is September and time for your monthly update on the lovely Luna? The passage of time is a strange anomaly in this pandemic: sometimes, it seems to go … sooooo … slowly. Now, in a flash, the end of the summer is right around the corner, and we’re headed into the home stretch for 2020. I, for one, will be happy to leave both 2020 and Covid-19 behind (we can hope, can’t we?).

The last thirty days have been a boon for Luna, filled with incredible blessings. In addition to sunbathing in her special, sponsor-provided window perch, she is basking in the sunshine of truly excellent health—an amazingly clear countenance (her “fancy word” for face) and trouble-free ears.

Yes! Luna is off all ear medications and antibiotics—a delight to the staff, who worried about her being on so many different prescriptions. Slowly, the dosages of the steroids she takes for allergies are being reduced and the results, so far, seem very favorable. Luna will always have allergy problems and will require a special, hypoallergenic diet all her life but, ladies and gentlemen —furry feline lovers all—this is REALLY good news, and we’re happy to share it with you! We’ve never really seen Luna so happy and content. Note: We think that kinda happens when you don’t itch!

Investigating the oxygen machine! What fun!

Speaking of changes, there’s been another major one in Luna’s life.  She now has another roommate in the lab. Replacing Clark was never really possible—he was such a wonderful boy.  But Roxy is doing her best to fill his shoes.  Like Clark, Roxy came to the lab from Suite A and has GI problems, just as he did.  A beautiful, long-haired tortie, Roxie is 11 years old and has had intestinal issues all her life.  She is scheduled for a GI study soon, so Denise and Jess are hopeful we can help her.  In the meantime, she’s the perfect roommate for Luna, even if she is five years her senior.  What makes it work? Well, the two of them eat the same diet and, then, they simply ignore each other. As far as Luna is concerned, Roxie doesn’t even exist … period. Should she attempt to avail herself of Luna’s window perch—well, that might be another story!

Luna continues to keep up with her laboratory work apace and, mad scientist that she is, cannot be left unattended.  Denise says she is incredibly mischievous and must not be left alone for a single second.  In addition to perusing other patient files (HIPAA rules be … well, you know), she is into each and every cabinet in the medical suite.  Steps continue to be taken to waylay her, but the results aren’t always successful.

Finding her way into the fluids cabinet recently, Luna felt it her duty to “taste test” the saline bags.  The result was a gusher, flooding the lab floor and making quite a mess for the rest of the team to clean up.  Needless to say, the fluid cabinet is now very OFF LIMITS, permanently closed to Luna’s inspections. Further scientific progress will simply have to wait. As for Luna, she’s biding her time (and chasing her tail) until her next misadventure! Below is a video of that adventure for your enjoyment.
