Update for Yardley

Update for Yardley

Greetings Yardley Sponsors!

I have much better news with this update!

Last month was quite scary. Yardley’s blood sugar was high but not high enough to regularly need insulin. This also happened around April, if I am recalling correctly. Then Yardley developed an upper respiratory infection. This hit her very hard. She stopped eating. We had her on an appetite stimulant, subcutaneous fluids, and antibiotics.

We have seen this before. We have seen a minor upper respiratory infection hit an older cat hard, to the point where you question their quality of life. Then they recover and you breathe a sigh of relief. It is very hard.

With Yardley, we were afraid that her cancer was resurfacing. She did recover from her upper respiratory infection within a week. Even though she was feeling better, we wanted to make sure we were not missing anything. Yardley had an abdominal ultrasound and it was clear!

It is 18 months after her cancer diagnosis and there are no signs of cancer. We reached out to the oncologist who had diagnosed Yardley. She said that it does look like Yardley is in remission, which does not usually happen with the type of cancer Yardley has (multiple myeloma). She said to stop the chemotherapy drug, as it is not good to do long-term. We are in uncharted waters.

Uncharted, but hopeful waters! Maybe even calm waters! Yardley’s current medications are her fluoxetine (for her dislike of other cats), Cerenia (for nausea), and of course her Creon for her EPI. While Yardley has not had issues with vomiting in a long time, we did not want to stop the Cerenia because she was on chemo. Right now, we do not want to change too much at once. We will see how she is doing off the chemo, if there are any changes. If all is well, maybe we can take her off the Cerenia.

Yardley is feeling good. She is eating well and sleeping on top of a cat bed instead of in because you get more sun rays that way!

Thank you again for sponsoring Yardley!! She’s amazing and so are you!
