Update for Yardley

Greetings, Yardley sponsors!

Yardley gave us a bit of a health scare this month. Last month, she had stopped grooming herself. I brushed her really well over the course of a week. She did not appreciate it, but we got it done. After that, she did keep up with her grooming.

Around the same time, I brought Yardley into Tabby’s Place to be seen by Dr. Collins. I gave her gabapentin ahead of time. This is medication enables Yardley to calm down a bit before going into a stressful situation, such as the vet. This worked well for this visit, too. Yardley was grumbly, but not too stressed.

Yardley had lost some weight, which is concerning since she is eating well. Her physical exam was normal. She has been stable for quite some time, but her initial prognosis, way back in April 2019, was just 4-6 months. I am always concerned that Yardley’s multiple myeloma may come back with full force.

Fortunately, this is not the case. We did chest radiographs this month, which were clear.

There was, however, glucose in her blood and urine. You will recall that Yardley was diabetic when she first came to Tabby’s Place. When she became sick with multiple myeloma, her diabetes went into remission. This past March (or was it April? this pandemic has been messing with my memory), we did find glucose in her blood and urine as well. I brought home all the supplies needed for a diabetic. I checked her blood sugar every day at home, and not once was it high enough to warrant insulin.

Just last night, I checked her blood sugar again, and again it was not high enough to warrant insulin. We will see what happens for the next few weeks.

As we like to joke at Tabby’s Place, Yardley “just has a touch” of diabetes. While this makes treating her a bit tricky, at least this is not the multiple myeloma acting up.

Thanks again for sponsoring Yardley. Yardley came into Tabby’s Place a very sick cat, but, thanks to you, she has been giving this amazing chance of having a family to love and care for her. We could not do this without you. Thank you.
