Update for Yardley

Greetings Yardley Sponsors!

I hope you are all doing well in these tough times.

Some cats are unhappy that their humans are home all the time. Yardley is enjoying it! The kids are home doing their online schooling. Yardley likes to hang out with the kids while they are doing their school work. Yardley has been in many school Zoom classroom events.

Yardley’s story begins with lovely people finding her in their yard last January. They took her to the vet, who did bloodwork showing she was diabetic. This was something they were not able to handle, so they called Tabby’s Place and we were able to take Yardley. Yardley maintained well on one unit of insulin twice a day.

Then Yardley became very ill. Her glucose was never high enough to need insulin. Her diabetes went into remission as her EPI and multiple myeloma came out. We monitored her glucose regularly. It has been normal, until this month.  For her monthly bloodwork, her glucose was high. Sometimes stress in cats can cause high glucose in the blood. We also checked her urine and there was glucose in her urine as well. I took home all the necessary supplies for a diabetic. Insulin, syringes and a glucometer to check her blood sugar every day.

Every day it was normal. She has not needed insulin. I am grateful for that. We will recheck her next month and see where her levels are at. We will also be giving her gabapentin, a drug that is commonly used for neuropathic pain but has shown mild sedation and relaxation for cats. Gabapentin has been used extensively for cats who become stressed at the vet. The cats can become relaxed but not completely out of it. Gabapentin before a vet visit can help lower the stress of the cat. Yardley has become more and more stressed each time she goes to Tabby’s Place for a vet visit. We think gabapentin will be very helpful for her.

Yardley has been a little stressed with the other cats as well. She has always disliked the other cats, but she seemed to be having a harder time tolerating them around her. We started her on Prozac a few weeks ago. It seems to be helping. She’s more calm and relaxed. She seems happier.

I truly hope all of you are doing well. Thank you for continuing to sponsor Yardley in these unpredictable times. It means the world to us. We could not care for special cats like Yardley without you.

Thank you and be well.
