Update for Thomas

Greeting to Team Thomas!

There’s mixed news on this month’s health front for His Orangeness. Thomas’ weight is continuing a slow, downward trend. He’s still not skinny by any stretch of the imagination, but we’re concerned enough that we’ve started him on an appetite stimulant. On the positive side, his kidney values have improved since last month, and his most recent blood work looked good.

Our vet still believes that our sweet boy is in the early stages of renal failure, but, as I mentioned last month, early-stage kidney failure can remain stable for months or even years before progressing or causing other difficulties. Because of this, we have not started Thomas on any medications related to it.

We were greatly saddened by the sudden loss of Thomas’ suitemate Nickey this month, but, typically, Thomas seems unaffected by it. He’s much more interested in getting attention, no easy matter when you have to compete with other cats looking for the same thing.

I’ve noticed, though, that Thomas is always one of the first cats at the door of his suite in the mornings. As soon as he hears people entering the back hallway, he’s up and prowling around near the door, hoping for some love (and, it must be admitted, something to eat). Our beautiful marmalade boy understands that few people can resist his good looks and affectionate nature; I know I can’t!

I can scarcely believe that 2009 is rapidly coming to a close. As is appropriate for the biggest November holiday, I’d like to give thanks for you and your continuing support of Thomas. In a facility full of special felines, our boy continues to stand out as one of the best. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
