Update for Max

Dear Sponsors,

As Max’s long-time correspondent, I write this update with concern for our beloved fellow.

Max is experiencing some difficulties now from a psychiatric standpoint. Many of his long-time supporters will remember that Max had some emotional issues some years ago. With medications and much love and support from our wonderful staff and volunteers, Max was able to overcome his challenges. For the past few years, Max has continued to thrive under that care, and we were all SO very pleased with his stability.

In the past, his issues seemed to be related to adjustments to other felines introduced into his suite. For everyone’s safety and protection, Max used to have his own “man-cage” at night. When Tabby’s Place closed during the nighttime hours, Max was placed in his big wire cage. It contained all of his favorite things, to make him feel comfortable. Nice fluffy blankets, his favorite dry food, a few treats and fresh water were provided to make his stay peaceful. He seemed not to mind it, and we were assured that everyone else in his suite would also rest in comfort and peace.

However, now there is one major difference in his emotional status: He is more agitated with HIMSELF rather than others.

Initially, Max’s episodes were only noted as walks with a “stalk,” and some growling as he moved about his home suite. The big, spacious Community Room that Max calls “home” allows others to get out of his path quickly if he seems agitated by their presence. But his agitation progressed to include a new behavior: attacking his own tail.

A medication was prescribed, and Max again returned to being caged at night. However, he continued to damage his own tail while caged. A second medication was added, which initially seemed helpful, but he remained very sensitive to any stimulation.

One thing that has remained a constant in Max’s life is his love for feline Sammy, a gentle and loving cat. Their long-time friendship and compatibility has remained a positive force in Max’s life, and has played a major role in his stability. It was decided to give Max and his friend Sammy their own private suite, away from any other cats, and allow him a totally supportive feline environment. But he attacked his own tail the first night with a vengeance that required medical follow-up the next morning.

At the time of this writing, Max remains in a private suite, where he’s receiving lots of extra affection — and supervision. We’re beginning to see some very positive signs that the change in medication is helping him to feel calmer and happier, and we’ve outfitted his special room with a fountain and lots of cozy, comfy spaces. We’re worried, but optimistic that brighter days are ahead for Max.

Please join me in prayer that the upcoming days bring nothing but improvement, peace and contentment for our Max. I know if he could do so, he would be putting “pen to paw” himself this month to thank you all for your most generous gifts that provide the supportive care he needs so much now at this holiday season.
