Our wonderful staff and volunteers noticed some behavioral changes in our boy this month, which resulted in a full veterinary evaluation. As we know, Max is a senior gentleman now, and issues with older animals can appear at any time. Some senior changes are subtle and expected; others may happen suddenly and without warning. Therefore, it is important that we keep on top of anything that we see. Preventive care is just one way of keeping Max at the top of his game.
I have been proud of Max over the past few years, as this once feisty feline has mellowed and is usually welcoming to new suite residents. Prozac has been helpful in making this transition. So helpful, in fact, that his dosage was recently decreased, as we wondered if it was truly needed. However, he soon started swatting at suitemates Leila and Paco (though he DID remain friendly to his devoted feline friend Sammy). His biggest “cheerleader” (me) is happy to say that he is back to himself, treating all with kindness and respect.
Another odd behavior was noted by astute Max-watchers: some confusion over the litter-box. He seemed to be circling it, unsure of why he was there. His weight loss was another concern. Max received a thorough examination, and his known medical issues were reviewed.
At the time of this writing, our veterinary staff has concluded that Max’s symptoms could be indicative of Irritable Bowel Disease. Often, the only symptom of IBD is weight loss. Max began a new regimen of a daily appetite stimulant as well as a steroid to keep his intestines calm and any inflammation that may occur suppressed. He receives this along with his behavioral medication, and I am VERY happy to report that he has gained a pound (a lot for a cat!)
All through this diagnostic evaluation, Max remained loving and affectionate to staff and volunteers who love him in return. Though it is difficult to share news of a medical issue with you, I know you all join me on the sidelines as cheerleaders for Max. When I walk into his suite, those big green eyes greet me with a sparkle of recognition, affection, and anticipation of our visit.
Thank you, dearest Max, for always making me “smile with my heart.”
On behalf of Max and Tabby’s Place, I thank you for your most gracious gift of support to my favorite feline fellow. May the blessings you have offered to Max be returned to you and yours at this Thanksgiving holiday season.
