My father is an avid golfer. Not only does he play every chance he gets, but each weekend he watches whatever professional tournament happens to be on television. His favorite golfer on the PGA Tour is K.J. Choi, whose nickname is “Hawkeye”, for the way he stares down the ball. Every time the networks show K.J. taking a shot, my dad shouts at the T.V., “show me the eyes!!!” Dad always loves intense competitors.
Like K.J., Max has an intense stare. Actually, “intense” does not do it justice. It is intense, yes; in fact, in the first sixty seconds of interaction with Max, you will, I’m sure, experience “THE STARE”. See, “THE STARE” is definitely something that is experienced, and that experience is best described as unnerving.
Max likes to lock eyes with me, and I can see his mind working. In many ways, it seems that he is eyeing me up for when his insidious plan for world domination is set into motion. Quite honestly, it has always struck me as something out of a horror film. I half-expect to be awoken one night by a loud clap of thunder and see Max illuminated briefly by lightning before he chomps down on my throat. For this reason, after a visit to Tabby’s Place, I’m always sure to check under my car for stowaways and, once home, I double check my doors and windows to make sure they’re locked.
I used to think I was the only one who felt this way, until I read Angela’s Special Needs update for us correspondents. She wrote:
Max does still have a tendency to…um…freak people out, just a little. It was a recent topic of conversation among Tabby’s Place staff that Max has an unnervingly intense stare. Once he locks those golden eyes on you, he doesn’t look away, and you can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking.
Knowing Max as well as I do, however, I am convinced his stare is his way to remember the good guys in his life…for when he sets his insidious plan for world domination into motion. It is the only explanation for the sole creepy characteristic of one the sweetest felines I know, and Max is such a mellow, healthy love bug.
Thank you for your continued support of our scary sweetheart. Because of your generosity, Max enjoys good health, good moods, and good friends…whom he loves creeping the living daylights out of on occasion. Enjoy your summer and stay cool!
