Update for Max

Hello, Max Lovers!

I am very happy to report that our Max is doing well after his surgery this past week. I know you were probably very concerned but did appreciate Angela’s early update to inform us directly of his circumstances.

I had a great visit with Max yesterday—he was very receptive to seeing me. He has been allowed visitors to his suite over the weeks, but visitation since his surgery last week has been more restricted. We do not want him to get too excited or to move around more than what is necessary; we want him to heal. He has many beds and soft blankets thoughtfully placed around his suite for his comfort. He is enjoying trying out each one of them!

Max’s suite is sunny and bright and he seems to enjoy the warmth and cheeriness of it. I sat down on the floor in the center of his suite and allowed him to move around me as he felt comfortable.

I received many head butts, which is what we at Tabby’s Place call it when a cupped hand is placed above a cat’s head, and the cat moves up into your hand. Head butts are a sign of real affection. However, as I did not want Max to overdo it, I was careful not to keep my hand there too long. When I stopped, Max then reached down into my lap for my hand, enjoying the affection, and not ready for it to stop. I continued to pet him until he decided it was time for a break; he remained grateful for the company.

We “talked” a great deal while I was there, and in his own way, he showed me his tail. I was surprised at how good the area looked, and how far along Max already is in the healing process. He seems in no discomfort and may be glad to be rid of the object that has caused him so much annoyance for such a long time. Max has always had an aversion to his tail and it served for a long time as the target of his self-mutilation. Of course, he is being VERY closely monitored to make sure this behavior does not start anew; his medications have been adjusted accordingly.

I know you share my appreciation for the staff who is taking excellent care of our fine fellow. The compassion and concern given Max is something wonderful to witness. Each staff member clearly loves Max and wants the best for him. Combined with the extra emotional support Max receives from our volunteers, I have no doubt that Max is on the path to a fine recovery.

Thank you, most gracious sponsors, for your love, care and support of Max during this crucial time for him. A special thank you to Max, for always making me “smile with my heart.” It is an honor and a privilege to share your news each month with those who so dearly love you.
