Update for Fenek

June Greetings to You, and to All Fenek’s Friends!

Fenek’s been feeling fine. In addition to maintaining the gains reported last month, this month medical staff decided his insulin requirements could be reduced a little bit.

Probably unrelated, but since Shifty’s adoption, our Distinguished Gentleman cat is now the only male in the lounge. Samantha, Rashida, and Lynette all generally go their own way, although the latter cat sometimes disputes Fenek over possession of the soft blanket on the main table.

I do what I can to deter that kind of territorial conflict when I visit, bringing in a fleece blanket from the laundry room to spread on my lap for Fenek. Sometimes I barely get the blanket spread before he steps down from the table to make himself good and comfortable.

During one recent example of Quality Time, he relaxed for close to a half-hour before hopping down to the floor and getting a drink of water. Before too long, he’d satisfied his thirst and was back in place on the fleece, where he got into a different (but no less comfortable) position to enjoy more petting and murmured affection for another 30 minutes.

Occasionally, someone would enter the lounge for a few moments, and once a young woman made a beeline for Rashida to love on her where she was curled up on top of a piece of cat furniture, but for the most part, the hour was just between Fenek and me. I don’t know how he could have been more comfy or relaxed unless I would have tried to make him into a temporary zen garden. While he probably wouldn’t have minded the gentle skritches from a tiny rake, I suspect he wouldn’t have appreciated having stones (even smooth ones) laid on his torso.

In further good news from the past month, the Cherish the Kittens fundraising campaign hit its goal several days before the deadline. The Tabby’s Place Development Department was thrilled by the way supporters came through to help Tabby’s Place fulfill its mission to the smallest and most vulnerable cats.

Between that and your continuing generosity for the older Special Needs cats like Fenek, everyone at Tabby’s Place thanks you. In raising an appreciative toast, it’s nice to think that the contents of your glass were quite possibly created with grain that had been protected from rodents by distillery cats. One hard-working Scottish cat holds the world record for mousing. Would you believe 29,000 mice?! Even though it contains nothing stronger than cola, I’ll raise my glass to that.

By the way, if you enjoy stories about our cats, you may enjoy our blog, where we post at least three times every week.

Until next month, wishing you all good things…
