Update for Adam

Happy May, friends of Adam!

I hope spring finds you well. Our Adam is thriving and enjoying life to the fullest.

Suite C is a bit cleaner this month. Adam’s diarrhea has improved. That’s good news for him, too, as it means we can discontinue his annoying medications. Otherwise, Adam is as blithe as ever, oblivious to everything except the excitement of simply being alive.

He recently caused a new volunteer to fall so in love that she scooped him into her arms and held him for a good long time. When warned that this was a very good way to get pooped upon, the smitten volunteer just grinned and said, “It’s worth it for him!”

As I discovered last week, Adam loves playing with a feather toy. It really seems to help keep him calm with the other cats. He likes to chase the “bird” and try to kill it. He gets so smug when he thinks he has succeeded in killing the bird, then becomes adorably confused when I pull it away and it attacks him again! Playing with him is so much fun, and I know that it is therapeutic as well.

Adam has been getting better about not torturing the other cats in his room. The last few times I have been in to visit, he has been remarkably calm. He did try to enrage a new cat in his suite, Lincoln (who is absolutely adorable and so meek and sweet), but it didn’t work. Adam just didn’t seem to have the heart to attack. He took a small swipe at Lincoln, but then lowered his paw and just began to sniff him. The encounter ended almost before it started. How refreshing for Adam! Way to go, buddy!

Adam still likes to watch his room being cleaned. He used to try and “help,” which always made the cleaning process go a bit more slowly. Now he gets on one of the shelves in the room and just watches. This past week, there was pee all over the room — I really mean all over! I’m fairly sure that this was due to Adam. His diarrhea may have cleared up, but his peeing at will has not. Anyway, while I was cleaning the floor, Adam just sat and looked adorable while his people cleaned up his messes. I actually think I saw a thank you pass his lips. Have we seen a reformed Adam?

Finally, Adam treated me with a lot of love and respect the other day. Usually he is so desperate for love that he ends up hurting whoever is the object of his affection at that moment. On Saturday, Adam allowed me to pet him on the head and back without trying to nip at me. Then he put one front paw up on my stomach. I was prepared to have to walk away because he was going to get too frisky. Instead, he just gently kept his paw there, no claws out, and allowed me to scratch his chin and his head. He was so sweet. He gave me a little lick and everything. But no teeth and claws were used at all. We have turned a corner! I’m so excited!

Adam loves you, too. He is so grateful for all that you do for him. I think our love is beginning to wear off on him, and he is learning what it means to love. Thank you so much for your help in this, be it in person or long distance. Adam feels that love and it is making a huge difference in his adorable little life. Have a wonderful May everyone!
