Hello, Adam friends! Happy June! Adam hopes that you are well and enjoying the start of summer.
Adam is doing well, although he is puzzling us at the moment. Well, Adam always puzzles us, but that is par for the course. In the usual realm of Adam news, his stool is spectacular! He is still on high fiber food, and it seems to be working well. Adam hasn’t needed an enema in quite some time, and his poop is almost perfect consistency. (Oh, the things I write about when it comes to this special little guy!)
It’s other health news that has us puzzled. About three weeks ago, when I was doing a long afternoon volunteer shift, I noticed that Adam was acting unusually. He was laying down in a crate that he doesn’t usually inhabit, and he seemed very listless. I thought maybe he was just sleepy, so I let him be. When he was still sleeping two hours later, in the exact same position, I decided that I would go in and check on him. He picked up his head when I petted him, but was really agitated with me for touching him. He seemed uncomfortable, but I still couldn’t really tell if something was wrong or if he was just being the usual, unusual Adam.
Another hour went by, and I peeked in the window of Suite A to see what he was doing. He was still in the same crate, but he had shifted positions. He looked really uncomfortable. I went back into the room and checked on him again. He got up and started walking toward me, but his front feet were turning under when he walked. He didn’t have trouble walking, but he was walking strangely. He also had a glassy-eyed look and wanted no affection at all. I decided that I needed to let someone know that Adam was not doing alright.
I didn’t think it was an emergency, so I decided to write it down on our vet list. (This is a clipboard near the vet room, where volunteers can list any cat who seems to have a non-emergency issue, like a scratch or a runny eye, that should be looked at by the vet or vet tech.) I wrote down Adam’s name, but when it came to writing down the problem, I wasn’t sure what to write. So, I wrote “Adam is acting strange.” Then I felt silly, because that is what we say about Adam every day!
I ran into Jonathan as I was getting ready to leave, and I decided that I would tell him about Adam acting strangely. I guess Jon knows that I’m not an alarmist when it comes to the cats, and he is such an Adam champion that he went with me to check on Adam right away. He got our senior vet tech to come along as well. She checked Adam out to see if he was constipated and palpated him all over. She watched him walk and agreed that he was holding his feet oddly, but she couldn’t find anything wrong.
Since that day, I have checked in on Adam several times. He seems to be himself, but he is still walking funny. I talked to our junior vet tech this Saturday, and I asked her if they ever found a reason for Adam’s strange gait. She said that they did all kinds of tests and can’t find a reason for it. I guess we’ll just chalk it up to Adam being Adam. He will always be a puzzle! But he is my kind of puzzle, and I adore this silly little boy.
I know that you adore our boy too. He is so grateful for you. It is because of your generosity that Adam can get the amazing treatment that he needs. Not only is his stool behaving itself and keeping Adam more comfortable, he is able to receive monitoring and testing for every strange ailment that he can throw at our vet team. They do a wonderful job of keeping our kitties healthy and safe.
Adam sends you his love. He hopes that next month he will be back to walking normally and have some more entertaining news for you. Until then, take care and enjoy the lovely weather.
