Update for Adam

Happy June, friends!

Adam sends you his love and hopes you are enjoying these warm sunny days.

Adam has had a very good month health-wise. Other than a single episode of diarrhea, he’s been stable. He even gained a quarter pound, and is clearly feeling good…and, dare I say it, calm. (OK, calm for Adam. But we’ll take it.)

Adam has been enjoying a lot of time in the solarium. I have noticed, on at least two occasions, that he really enjoys napping on a large bed with Pepita. They seem to have become snuggle buddies. This is very different for Adam, who usually doesn’t give other cats the time of day. It is nice that he has a friend.

I decided, this month, that I was going to make a mission of getting Adam to play. I am frustrated by just talking to Adam and seeing him walk around in that stalky way of his. I know there is more to this special boy than just that sort of strange personality. So, I went to a pet store and bought a special wand toy. It has a squeaky mouse and some feathers on the end of the cord. I thought that if I played with him for a while, perhaps Adam would get a little tired out, and I would be able to pet him more without getting swatted or nipped.

At first, Adam just stared at the toy like he had no idea what it was. He was not interested in chasing the mouse. He barely even looked at it. I thought my mission was going to fail before I even got started. Pepita seemed interested, so I let her bat at the mouse for a bit. Adam lay down on the large bed in the solarium. I started twirling the mouse around like it was a tetherball…and Adam started to hit it! He lay on his back and basically played tetherball. It was fun! He would bat it one way and then, when it swung around, he batted it the other way. But he lost interest after about three rounds of tetherball.

Then the strangest thing happened. Adam grabbed the mouse, held it between his paws, and began grooming it! He was licking the mouse, not as if he were trying to eat it, but clearly grooming it. I think it was his kitten! I have never seen him act like this before. He face softened, and he looked so peaceful. I was even able to pet him repeatedly while he was “grooming” his baby. I got to pet Adam more in those few seconds than ever before. However, once the mouse was taken away, Adam wouldn’t permit me to pet him again. He kept trying to nip me.

I’ll be very curious to see what happens when I bring the mouse back next time. We’ll see if he has the same reaction, or if some new Adam behavior creeps up.

Adam hopes you have a wonderful start to summer. He wishes you some outdoor porch time, and hopes you find a new friend to enjoy, as he has found his mouse. He appreciates all that you do for him and sends you his love.
