Update for Shifty

Update for Shifty

Hello, Dear Friends!

Shifty here, putting “pen to paw” this month to bring you my news.

I sure had a busy month!

In their infinite wisdom, our veterinary team members here at Tabby’s Place felt it was time to do a total monitor of my blood glucose levels (sugar). This was to find out how my body is responding to the insulin injections I receive two times a day.  A quick check via a small pick can obtain immediate results to see where I am at any given time of the day. However, for a true, overall interpretation of just how my system is utilizing the insulin provided with the injections, it is always best to run a complete overview every few months.

My FreeStyle Libre monitor

The test is called a glucose tolerance test, and it is a very reliable means of showing how my body is absorbing the insulin, and how it makes use of the insulin all throughout the day. I am happy to report that the test indicated that I could receive a lower dose of insulin!

These results were also double-checked by the use of a FreeStyle Libre monitor, which continuously checks my blood glucose levels over the course of several weeks.  I wore it on my side, as you will see from the photo. I was not restricted in activity by this monitor and was able to go about my normal “duties” comfortably.

The results of this long-term monitoring showed that I am well-regulated at this new lower dosage level of insulin.

Taking a rest while guarding the Volunteers Wanted flyers!

Speaking of normal activities, I have sent along a photo of myself resting in a chair near an end table in the Employee/Volunteer Lounge I call “home.”  If you look closely, you will see a small pile of blue flyers near the telephone.  As mentioned in my previous updates. we are actively seeking new volunteers to introduce to Tabby’s Place prior to the opening of Quinn’s Corner, our new wing.

Who better to help counsel our current volunteer recruiting team than a cat that already lives here?  I take my role seriously, and try to be as helpful as possible.  As I figure it, every new volunteer has to come into the Lounge at some point; I may be the first cat that person sees!  With my svelte good looks and fun personality (if I do say so myself!), anyone who comes through will get a great first impression as they sign in!  My FreeStyle Libre monitor was seen by many new faces and offered a learning example of the extraordinary level of care we cats receive here at Tabby’s Place.  A win-win for all!

Well, I must get back to my phone calls now.  If you know of any people as nice as you who may want to help us out in our upcoming fall months, please give me a call and let me know!  I will be happy to pass their names along to our Volunteer Coordinator Karina, who will reach out in turn. Or you can have them go to our Volunteer Page on our website, find out all about volunteering, and submit an application there.

Meanwhile, I remain grateful for your monthly gifts that have provided for this special care that I needed in these past few weeks.  While many a senior feline struggles to get and keep diabetes regulated, I remain a very lucky gentleman cat. I have so many people that love and care about me.

Believe me, knowing that makes all the difference!

With all my love,
Shifty
