Update for Luna

Update for Luna

Dear Team Luna,

My name is Denise and I am the Senior Veterinary Technician at Tabby’s Place and, more importantly, Luna’s office mate. I am making a guest appearance this month to bring you Luna’s update.

So, what can I say about this special little girl? Luna has more personality than I could have ever anticipated. Have you ever had that roommate or friend that made you laugh so hard all the time, was super fun and very loyal, but somehow always got you into trouble? That is my girl.

Please let me out

Since the pandemic started and we had to break up into smaller teams, I felt sad for Luna. She was not allowed to have access to the entire medical suite (because she gets into trouble), and she had less attention without me in the office (and no visits from her regular correspondent). So, I crafted some barriers to our testing machines using pieces of cardboard boxes. It was working well, so I let her out more and more on the days I was working.

Well, Luna will remind you that you should not allow yourself to become too comfortable or let your guard down. During a vet day (a day the Veterinarian comes in) when we were busy, she was out and heard the testing machines running. This is her favorite because the bubbles start going up and down the tubes and they are super fun to chase AND bite. Do we know what happened next? Yep, you guessed it; she bit through the tubing and now our machine is out of commission until the new tubing comes in. So, what next? We are working with a company to install doors on the lab station so she can no longer have access to the machines.

Napping on the medical files

In addition to all of this, we have been battling a stubborn ear infection with Luna and another flare up of her skin condition. We were able to get a handle on her skin quickly because we intervened early and started a steroid course. Her skin now looks beautiful, but her left ear has an infection that won’t quit. We sent out a culture and treated appropriately topically, but it is still present. Now we are treating topically (ear drops) and systemically (oral antibiotics) and we sent out another culture to see if anything changed.

As if this lady wasn’t expensive enough with her medical issues, she is now spending money by having us make special accommodations (and repairs) for her behavior. I wouldn’t have it any other way though. She is my office mate and I won’t give up on her. I love her AND her sense of adventure.

Your Guest Correspondent,

Denise
