Update for Luna

Dear Team Luna,

It is only June, but it seems spring has whizzed right by and we are already well on our way into summer. How do you like the heat and humidity so far? All the Tabby’s Place cats are enjoying the sunshine on stroller walks or in their solariums, but we do have to monitor them carefully for any reactions to the high temperatures.  Luna still enjoys strolling immensely.

Ever the keen observer, she takes note of everything around her, and we are sure there is a journal of her findings well hidden somewhere in the lab.  She hasn’t deigned to share it with us yet, and we have a sneaking suspicion that’s because all of us are in it!  Luna is a tough taskmaster, and we’re not certain that some of us would be happy with our performance reviews. Angelo, in particular, is worried about what Luna might have to say about him.  We’ve taken to separating the two, and Luna is only allowed to interact with Angelo under our senior vet technician Denise’s supervision. Poor Angelo! He really wants to befriend Luna just as he did with Mary in Suite B, but she simply is having none of it.

Luna’s experiment with wet food this past month was both exciting and problematic.  She approached her new diet with exuberance and enthusiasm, enjoying every morsel. Unfortunately, her days as a gourmand were numbered:  she almost immediately began having skin irritation and diarrhea. Luna has returned to her offering of dry food only and is on an increased steroid dosage to clear up her skin.  Although her overall condition is improving, she will continue on her medications.  Certainly, we are as disappointed as she is with this failed food experiment. We were so hoping we could expand Luna’s gastronomic horizons!  Pleasing the palate of a cat with so many allergies is not an easy task.

Wait a minute!  Luna tells me I have been remiss and failed to share the most important Tabby’s Place news with you, And, of course, she’s right!  In case you haven’t heard it through the grapevine, the long-awaited groundbreaking for the new building addition took place on Sunday, June 13. Construction on the expansion is began on Monday, June 14.  We will soon be posting a video of the Groundbreaking Ceremony to our home page, so stay tuned!

This is such exciting news and, although we don’t know how our cats, staff, and volunteers will react to the disruption of construction on site, Luna believes any temporary inconvenience will be well worth it for permanent improvement.  After all, we will be able to help so many more cats, especially two underserved communities: those with feline leukemia and neonatal kittens.  Our presence and profile in the feline care community will certainly grow with this expansion, and we are so grateful to all of our donors for such an opportunity.

Just don’t be surprised if, next month, you find us sending you pictures of Luna wearing a construction hat and fully supervising the entire operation!
