Update for Adam

Hi friends!

Adam and I hope that July is finding you well and that you are enjoying the summer.  We are both fine and enjoying the sunny days.

Adam has had a busy month in terms of medical news. His weight had gone down early in the month, but went back up and remained stable as the month went on. This is much like many things with Adam. He is a challenging medical case.

He had bloodwork processed, which indicated that he is borderline anemic. His stool tends to vary between extremes. This month he is in a very firm phase. The vet team decided to switch up his medications a bit. He was started on a medication to help with some nerve pain, he was taken off a medication for lose stool, and his steroid dose was decreased. We will continue to monitor as we know that Adam has a very delicate system that tends to respond quite dramatically to the littlest change in medications. His stool is a bit softer, which is a great relief to him and those of us that help him to express it.

Adam has been having some adventures this month.  A small number of volunteers are now allowed to help with certain tasks in the building so there is a bit more activity then there was last month.  As always, Adam loves to spend time in the solarium.  He is often out there lying in the sun, melting.  He looks like a little tabby puddle!

One morning the staff discovered a deceased vole in the solarium. We don’t know who was responsible, but Adam was discovered in close proximity to the creature. It seems unlikely to me that Adam dispatched the mole, but it is not at all surprising that he would be curious about it and then be in the position of being the accused.  Over the years, many mice, birds, and other small animals have mistakenly made their way into the solariums.  It is always a fun time for the cats, but a serious issue for those animals who lost their way.

Adam has enjoyed many more stroller rides in the last few weeks.  At first, the staff was taking a number of cats on stroller rides during the pandemic quarantine.  Now we have a program called Curbside Volunteering, for volunteers who aren’t part of the limited number who are working inside the building, to sign up to take specific cats on stroller rides.  Adam has been a popular choice and has enjoyed his time outdoors.  He is such an adorable, curious, little guy!

One of the volunteers who took Adam for a stroller ride had a great report, which I wanted to share.  She said, “I had the pleasure of taking Adam on my first outdoor volunteer shift.  He loved the stroller, and so enjoyed the time outside. To say I was surprised at his response would be putting it mildly; I was thrilled to witness his enthusiasm, good behavior, and fascination with his garden surroundings.  He watched the summer flowers, now in full-bloom, wave in the breeze.  He saw butterflies; he saws bird dipping at the feeders then resting in the branches above us.  I reminisced aloud about the cats memorialized along the brick pathway as we walked.  Adam’s big eyes looked thoughtful; it was almost as if he gave me a nod of understanding at the mention of a few names he may have remembered as well….”

Adam and I send our best wishes for a wonderful July.  We are very grateful for all that you do for Adam and the cats at Tabby’s Place.  We have been able to get through the worst of the shutdown with your help and look forward to the day when we can open up to volunteers, visitors, and in-person adopters once again.

Enjoy the rest of your month and Adam and I will be back with more news in a few weeks.
