Right now you may be thinking: Huh? Special update for Max? But, Max was adopted a month ago…
No use beating around the bush: Max is back.
By no fault of her own, Max’s adopter was forced to make a very difficult, painful decision to bring her boy back to Tabby’s Place. It seems that, after a couple of peaceful weeks in his adoptive home, a certain “crazy switch” flipped in Max’s mind. Unprovoked and utterly unexpectedly, he would attack his adopter and her husband, viciously.
Valiantly, they did their best to soothe him, to make his life sweet and predictable, and to make things work. It got to the point where these wonderful people were afraid of Max, never knowing when he would strike, or how bad it would be this time around.
For all Max’s past “madness,” this is a new level of angst. Max, as you know, has a history of attacking himself and (rarely) other cats – but never humans, not like this.
Our veterinary team is very worried that Max’s new behavior may be a sign of something seriously wrong. Combined with a recent trend of weight loss (both before and after his adoption), this volatility is a serious concern. So, we are in the process of working Max up, to get to the bottom of our tabby boy’s mystery.
I am grateful to report that, at this point, Max seems to be doing okay back “home” at Tabby’s Place. When he first came back, he was highly agitated, growling at all of us and seeming – well, out of his mind. It’s a fearsome thing to see such a large (and large-toothed) cat behaving so unpredictably…even though you know he’s really, deep down, a first class love bug.
But after a few days, Max started to settle in, and he seems to be content back in Adoption Room #2 at this point. His new roommates, Impy, Monica, Goldie and Jennifer Ann, are gentle souls who love other cats, so they give him no reason to stress.
We are all praying that Max’s mystery will be something we can resolve quickly and smoothly. If love has anything to do with it, Max’s best days are yet ahead. But, in the meantime, our wonderful, complicated, big-hearted tabby boy is blessed to have you in his life.
This all raises a bit of a strange issue. After Max was adopted, your sponsorship of him was transferred to the General Special Needs Fund (which cares for all of our kitties). Or, you may have chosen to transfer your sponsorship to a new cat. So, at this point, you are sponsoring either a new kitty or the Special Needs Fund.
If you would like to switch your sponsorship back to marvelous Max (or to sponsor him in addition to the new cat you may have chosen), he would certainly be grateful for your continued kindness. You can let us know your wishes by email, or by calling me at 908-237-5300 ext 235. If we don’t hear from you, we will assume that you would like to keep your sponsorship as it is now (that is, with a new kitty, or with the General Special Needs Fund). Whatever you choose, thank you from the bottom of my heart – and Max’s big heart – for all your generosity to our cats.
I do believe the best is yet to come for Max. Thank you for being part of making that a reality.
PS: The wonderful Jen will once again be writing for her buddy Max in future updates. 🙂
