Update for Adam

Happy New Year, Adam lovers!

Adam and I hope your year is off to a stellar start.

Our boy Adam has gained weight and is doing well, except for one instance of being observed eating his own poop. Our vet team checked to make sure he isn’t anemic, which he isn’t. We can only chalk this up to (a) Adam being a lunatic and (b) the fact that Suite A is transitioning to a new prescription diet. Last month, he ate a sweater, this month poo. We don’t even want to think about February.

Adam has recently been observed in cuddle-bug mode, snuggling right next to Chewbacca on the ramp. Chewie clearly hadn’t gotten a whiff of Adam’s breath!

I discovered, since we last talked, that Adam is, in fact, a cat! I wasn’t sure for the longest time, because he never really displays catly ways. He doesn’t like wand toys. He doesn’t really purr. He doesn’t love snuggles from people. He has always been a bit of a mystery. Well, one afternoon when I was volunteering, a lovely couple came in with a basket of holiday gifts for the cats. There was a great laser pointer toy in the basket. It had different attachments so you could project a snowman, a candy cane or a Christmas tree as the laser point. I tried it out on Adam. You wouldn’t believe it! He started jumping all over the place like crazy, chasing the laser. He even tried to climb up the wall. It was the first time I have really ever seen him act that way, and it was delightful!

Adam also had the opportunity this past weekend to take part in our “Paws to Read” program. We started a program on Saturday afternoons where children can sign up and come into Tabby’s Place to read to a cat or two. Similar programs have worked wonders at other shelters, helping kids learn to love reading and animals, and giving the animals some much appreciated love. Adam was read to by two of staff member Jess’s kids. He seemed really excited about it, although he never sat down to listen to a story. He did look awfully cute with two little boys around him sharing a book.

Adam wishes you well this winter and looks forward to a time when he can greet you. If you show up with a laser toy, he just might show you his newfound cat skills.
