Update for Adam

Happy May to you!

Adam is enjoying the warmer weather. It means there’s more room in his suite, as many of Adam’s cat comrades go off to enjoy the solarium. Adam used to hang out there a lot himself, but over the last year or so, he has been happiest inside his suite. I don’t know if it is because he feels like the ruler of that domain, or he just decided that he likes it better. He certainly is king, though, and he lords it over all of the other cats in the room.

It’s been a mercifully mellow month for this tabby king. Overall, Adam is doing well; he’s happy, comfortable, and his stool is a respectable #5 on the Fecal Scoring Scale. You mean you’ve never heard of the Fecal Scoring Scale? We use this in all seriousness at Tabby’s Place (and especially in Suite A). This is a numeric system ranking cats’ stool from #1 (very hard and dry, indicating constipation) to #7 (totally liquid). For Adam, “number five” is a grand accomplishment.

Adam has a new roommate this month. A little orange-and-white cat named Zach has moved into Suite A. He is a really sweet boy. When I spent some time with him, he just loved getting attention and was a total mush! Adam was sleeping, which surely helped make it possible for Zach and I get to know each other. I don’t know how Zach will react to people when Adam is awake.

I tried to play with Adam this month. I was hoping that some playtime would spark his interest and get him to stop his endless pacing. He played with the feather toy for a few seconds, but quickly lost interest. He batted it a few times, but then just let it drop. He was too busy checking out the rest of the room to see what was going on.

Adam reminds me of some of the children I have taught over the years who have attention issues. It is hard for them to focus on any one thing, and everything is equally important to their mind’s attention. This is how Adam seems to act. I wonder if cats can have attention deficits as well?

Adam actually seems even more wacky than usual lately. Jonathan, our Founder and Executive Director, noted recently that Adam “has crazy eyes like pinwheels.” I would have to agree with that assessment. Adam just never seems content.

I do worry about him. I will keep trying different things to see if I can find that one magic item that helps Adam enjoy his time with me. He does love to see me, and he’s eager for some head scratches. I just know that I can only scratch a few times before I have to move my hand if I want to keep it.

Adam sends you his love and appreciation. He knows that you care for him very much. Until next month, good health and happiness to you!
