Update for Adam

Update for Adam

Happy February, Adam lovers!

Adam and I hope this wintry month finds you warm and happy.

Adam is the same and yet not the same, somehow. While our wild child still requires medication, this month we were able to decrease the dosage of one antibiotic. It seems Adam has also decreased his aggressive tendencies, without dampening his wild and wonderful spirit. Although Adam has been less violent with his neighbors, he continues to gleefully bound out into the hallway and romp with wild abandon.

I have found Adam to be much more subdued. The behavioral medication that he is taking is definitely making him less hyper. He doesn’t swat anymore, and he doesn’t try to climb on people or nip at them. It does make for an easier time dealing with Adam and getting to see some of the other cats in his suite.

While Adam is much easier to get along with for both humans and felines, there is something missing. While I can pet him for several minutes, he almost doesn’t seem to notice that I am petting him. It is weird. He puts up with the petting, but he doesn’t seem to be enjoying it. Perhaps, he just needs to get used to this “normal” human-cat interaction.

Today when I visited with him, Adam was incredibly busy grooming his tail and back legs. He was completely absorbed in this grooming. Nothing was distracting him. This is also very odd for Adam. He is usually very easily distracted. Boom kept coming over to him and trying to engage with him, but Adam didn’t even look up. He didn’t feel threatened by Boom, nor did he care that Boom was in his personal space. This is definitely a new Adam.

I know that behavioral medications can subdue emotions and personality traits, and that is what seems to be happening with Adam. I think that the medicine is really helping him to make friends in his suite, and to get along with the humans in his life. He is much easier to handle (although the poor people who medicate him might have a different interpretation), and he is pettable. Over time, I think that his spunky personality will reemerge and he will be more engaged with the world around him. Sometimes it can take a bit of time to get used to the way that a medication makes one feel.

Of course, Adam is still as adorable as ever. He skulks around the suite like a little hyena. His head is always low to the ground and swinging from side to side. This head swinging and his funny gait always make me think of the hyenas in The Lion King. I half expect Adam to burst into song! He is so stinkin’ cute! You can’t help but fall in love with this wonderful, wacky cat.

Thank you so much, friends, for loving our boy. He is so grateful for all that you do for him. He wishes you a February filled with love and laughter!
