Update for Sammy

Dear Supporters of Sammy,

When I’m volunteering at Tabby’s Place and make my usual weekly visit with Sammy, nine times out of ten, she is sleeping, snoozing, cat-napping or whatever you like to call it. She is either in her tried and true cat tree, snuggled very cozily on top of a comfy blanket or she’s sharing Pixie‘s window box, curled up and looking as if she’s in the middle of some wonderful dream.

That observation—the fact that the domestic cat does so much sleeping—got me thinking as to how much they resemble their ancestors, the Big Cats.

The other day I was visiting the Philadelphia Zoo. One of my favorite places to go is Big Cat Falls where I can observe first hand their family of lions: Dad and Mom and their four girl cubs. While I was there, I was talking to a docent who explained that lions, in general, sleep about 20 hours a day, which is why every time I came to visit, they always seemed to be sleeping.

The same with Sammy. Despite the fact, that at times, I am there to groom her, or pet her, or in short, make much of her, she gazes up at me with her eyes half-open as if to say, “Could you please come back later? I’m kind of sleeping right now.”

And you can’t take that sleepy behavior personally. After all, cat’s sleeping is part of their genetic code. It’s what they do.

In terms of Sammy’s health, she is doing great. Healthy and happy. Loving her time in Pixie’s box and not quite noticing the bird feeder that is installed there, of course, because she is, yes, you guessed it—snoozing!

As always, thank you for your continued generosity. Enjoy spring! I hope the rain goes away and we have some lovely weather days!
