Update for Bacon

Update for Bacon

Dear Fans of Bacon,

Bacon’s fine! This month has been a bit more eventful for our boy, and he might have difficulty explaining some of the events. Because I don’t want to make any mistakes or omissions, I’m going to share the information Development Director Angela Hartley sent for Bacon’s update. On May 31st, Angela shared the following:

“One “Baconian” episode punctuated an otherwise mellow month for our silver boy. Earlier this week, Bacon was found to be “more abnormal than usual,” in the words of one staff member. He seemed to have limited vision, and although he was twitchy, he was unresponsive, even to having his paws squeezed. After about 45 minutes, our staff was able to get him to get him up to eat a bit of food, but that required scruffing him. Since Bacon didn’t have his usual (e.g. angry!) reaction to being scruffed, a trip to the emergency vet seemed in order. Just then, Bacon snapped out of it. In Jonathan’s words, it was almost as though someone had jump-started Bacon, as he was suddenly very active. He’s since been normal-for-Bacon. We will, of course, continue to monitor him closely.”

Unlike most of the cats at Tabby’s Place, Bacon lives in an office and, on most days, has his own personal staff member to watch over him. He does have to share Karina with Sally, but that’s no problem. Karina’s in the office and is able to notice any changes in his behavior quite quickly.

In addition, any staff member or volunteer going to the lounge must pass Karina’s office, making it fairly easy to monitor his behavior.
I have seen Bacon frequently during the past month. For the most part, he’s been fine. On one occasion, he did have a very mild seizure. It didn’t last very long. As soon as I noticed his behavior, I spoke softly to him and gently stroked his head. He quickly turned and looked at me. He was back to normal. When I reported this I was told that he’d recently had other mild seizures. On many of my visits, Bacon is sleeping peacefully in his crate. For a cat with a sleep disorder, that’s truly a blessing. Although I’m tempted to awaken him, I never do. When he is awake, I spend time petting him and giving him treats. He is such a special boy! I cherish every moment I get to spend with him. Like you, I sponsor and adore our silver sweetheart!

Thank you so much for sponsoring Bacon. You help make it possible for him to receive lots of love and the best possible care! Bacon and I both hope you have a fabulous, fun-filled Fourth of July!

P.S.: I visited Bacon today (6/11) after Sally had been crated. As soon as I walked into the office, he came out of his crate and greeted me with a “Hootzie” (his little, jumping greeting). He then sniffed my tote bag and looked up at me, as if to ask. “Anything for me?” I took out two bags, one with toys and one with treats. After investigating both bags, he decided he didn’t want any toys, but he ate several treats. After accepting my attention for a few minutes, he went over to Sally’s crate and tried to encourage her to become his friend. As usual, she ignored him! Some things never change. It was so wonderful seeing Bacon out and about, looking great and acting like a normal, contented kitty!
