Update for Bacon

Dear Sponsors,

This past month, Tabby’s Place Development Director Angela wrote that Bacon was in need of a correspondent. I emailed her immediately and volunteered! Like you, I am one of this very special boy’s sponsors. He is such a sweet, gentle soul who has gone through so much. I hope that I can do him justice in my updates; I shall certainly try my best.

The last time I visited Bacon in Adoption Room #3, I was concerned about him; he seemed unusually nervous. Sophia, who had been causing him distress, had been moved, but Luna was still there. I had never seen Sophia bother Bacon, but I had seen Luna annoy him. As soon as I sat down and started to pet Bacon and talk to him, Luna came over and swatted him! I never saw him retaliate; he would just sit there, looking perplexed, or retreat to the safety of his crate.

That day, he stayed with me and let me continue to pet him. After a few minutes, I gave him and some of his friends some treats. He ate a few but kept an eye on Luna. Secretly, I wished that Luna would be moved!

Well, wishes really do come true! Luna was moved, although she was not the only one. In April, Tabby’s Place initiated a game of “musical cats,” relocating many of our residents to improve their living quarters. Deciding where most of the cats belonged was probably a fairly easy task, but deciding the best place for Bacon was going to be a challenge.

As Angela observed, “Bacon is tied with Sally for the role of Most Behavior-Challenged Cat At Tabby’s Place.” What do you do with a cat like that? Where do you put him where he’ll be happy? He had thrived when he was in the Feral Room, where he was by himself. Unfortunately, there are no private rooms at Tabby’s Place. If there were, I think there would be quite a long list of applicants. Since he will never have his own room, what do you do with a cat like Bacon?

Fortunately, Karina, the brilliant Volunteer Coordinator at Tabby’s Place, came up with the answer: move him into her new office. Bacon would not, however, have Karina all to himself; he would have to share her…with Sally! That’s right — the very same Sally that Angela mentioned when she was talking about Bacon. When the moves were being planned, it was logical that Sally would go with Karina. Sally absolutely adores Karina; she’s Karina’s #1 fan!

But how does this living arrangement work? During the day, Sally is free to enjoy the office while Bacon relaxes in a nice, large crate. At night, Sally goes into her own large crate, and Bacon is released. When Karina comes to the office in the morning, she spends time with Bacon before putting him back into his crate.

How are things working out for our boy? According to Karina, “Bacon is loving his new office. He’s so much more relaxed and happy.”

When I visited Bacon late one afternoon, he had already been released. (I think the switch might be done at feeding time, because Sally was in her crate eating.) Bacon seemed very relaxed. I think this can be attributed to the slight increase in his anti-seizure medication, and the less stressful environment. Another volunteer stopped by and gave Bacon some treats through the open door. There’s a gate there, allowing the door to be left open at times. I feel so much better seeing Bacon in Karina’s office. I think it is certainly the best place for him.

Bacon has had a difficult time at Tabby’s Place. I think moving him into Karina’s office is going to be so good for him. When I’ve seen them, it seems as if Sally and Bacon are ignoring each other. The optimist in me hopes that one day they’ll become best buddies and can be out at the same time, sharing the office. The realist in me is just happy that each cat is content and enjoying life as it is at Tabby’s Place.

Bacon and I want to thank you for your support. You make it possible for this special guy to live in this wonderful place, where he receives lots of love and the best possible medical care. Thank you so much. You are one of Bacon’s guardian angels!
