Update for Bacon

Hello Bacon lovers,

Welcome to the world of Bacon. Don’t you just love his name? If you didn’t already know, Bacon was originally caught by a good Samaritan who used bacon as bait. Well, it worked. When this handsome feline arrived at Tabby’s Place, he smelled like bacon. Hence the name.

Bacon is as interesting as his name. He apparently has a sleep disorder, which is not a common condition in cats. He has these episodes that can sort of be described as night terror/seizure-like freak outs. It is bizarre, to say the least.

The veterinary staff at Tabby’s Place has started treating Bacon with medication that should help him sleep. Unfortunately, he is still having these episodes, and they have progressed to full blown seizures. Treating him has become a balancing act. One medication made him aggressive, while another put him in a stupor.

Tabby’s Place’s veterinary team has sought the expertise of a world-class veterinary neurologist, but Bacon’s condition remains baffling. We’ve been able to rule out several life-threatening diseases, and his MRI was normal. So at this point, we are treating the symptoms (Bacon’s seizures/sleep issues) and not certain of the cause. Our present hope is to find a combination of medications that prevents or reduces his seizures while allowing him to be alert and happy.

Bacon is generally a sweet boy, but as you can imagine, he can get a little cranky from his lack of sleep. He does love his treats and playing with toys. When I visited him last month, Bacon lay down next to me and enjoyed some nice rest while I pet him. On my most recent visit, I found Bacon sleeping — yay for him! Just like you never wake a sleeping baby, you also never wake a soundly sleeping Bacon. He looked so peaceful, so I just took some pictures and let him be.

Bacon is definitely in need of a special home. He will probably never be fully cured, but we hope he could live a happy life under the proper care. However, until that opportunity comes along, Tabby’s Place is his loving home, with many humans working hard to make him happy.

Your generous support helps with our mission to make Bacon well. Thank you for helping us find a way to make Bacon’s days wonderful and his nights more peaceful.
