Update for Bacon

How cute–with his tongue hanging out.

Dear Bacon Supporters,

I’m in heaven!

I usually visit Tabby’s Place once a week to volunteer. Of course, I stop in to see Bacon. Usually, I walk into the office early to mid-morning, anxious to see how the kid is doing. Is he having a good week? Have things taken a downturn lately?

I never know precisely what I’m going to find.

Week One: Bacon is curled up, fast asleep, in his house. He can come out at any time, but he seems so content there that I hate to do or say anything. Should I wake him up for my visit or let him sleep? I decide to let things be. As I’m leaving in the early afternoon, I stop by, but he’s sleeping again. Late night out with the gang?

Week Two: Bacon is out of his house. He is wide awake and eager. He meows when I come into the office. What a difference! There is energy in his step. I plop down on the floor, and he comes over to investigate. He smells my hand and turns around in front of me. I begin to pet him—very gently—and he moves closer. Is this the same Bacon I saw last week? I give him a few snacks, and that perks him up even more. He goes over to get a drink of water.

I can’t explain it, but I love our interaction just the same. I’ve learned not to overstay my welcome, but it’s hard to walk away.

Week Three: Bacon is awake but sitting placidly in his house. It takes the rattling of the snack bag and a few entreaties before he comes over to where I’m sitting. I reach out to pet him, but this time he backs away—just a bit. I offer a few snacks, and that brings him closer. And then he pops back into this house, where I feel he is eyeing me suspiciously. Am I imagining all of this?

“I’m so tired.”

Week Four: It’s Labor Day. I arrive earlier than usual, but stop to see how Bacon is doing. I should have guessed it. The poor kid—who obviously is recouping from doing too much labor (Ha-ha!)—is peacefully catnapping. I give him a gentle pat on the head, and the one eye opens a bit, but he doesn’t wake up. I can’t blame him. If I wasn’t volunteering, I’d probably be home cat-napping, too.

Celebrate With Me!

Now, for the extra good news. Bacon is doing just fine. He’s been in good health and, according to popular staff opinion, in good spirits. And I think I know the reason why–he’s almost famous as you can see by this posting on Facebook.

Bacon and I thank you, as always, for your continued support. He loves his life here at Tabby’s Place, and he, like so many other kitties who live here, are filled with gratitude for your generosity. Have a wonderful September.
