Update for Bacon

Dear Supporters of Bacon,

Sometimes I wonder what Bacon is doing when I’m not visiting him. How does he pass the time? Play with his toys? Sleep in that luxurious oversized new bed that’s in his suite? Pace the room back and forth, back and forth for exercise? Stay in his house and plot ways to escape?

“Hey, don’t forget about me. I’m hungry.”

When I usually arrive, he’s still in his house resting. Sometimes he’s anxious to come out and walk around. Sometimes he’s still a bit sleepy and I have to coax him to come out and pay me a visit. This morning when I came in, he was very still—almost like he was in a trance. I called his name several times but finally concluded it was just a little too early in the morning.

But I was wrong. I discovered that Bacon had his bi-annual check-up and grooming and because he’s such a sensitive guy, the staff has to fully sedate him whenever they attempt to do a full exam. That is why he was so “out of it” when I visited him. It took him a couple of days to recover from the sedation. The poor fellow was very sleepy and a bit off balance. The good news is that while he was sedated, they could give Bacon a good grooming and take care of some of his matted fur. (I thought he looked more handsome than usual.)

During the exam, they checked his phenobarb levels and adjusted his meds. His dose has decreased because the levels in his blood can change and the folks at Tabby’s Place try to keep the levels within a range.

Since that time, Bacon has bounced back to his “normal, quirky” self. Yay!

The time I visited him before this last time, it was as if he was waiting for me. As soon as I unzipped his house, he bounced out and did his usual jaunt around the room. We have the typical conversation:

“How are you doing, buddy?” I ask.

“Sweet dreams, oh yeah.”

“Not too bad.”

“Are they feeding you enough in here?”

“Oh, yeah, the food’s great.”

My favorite part is when Bacon is out and about and he walks by and deliberately makes contact. He’s a very sensitive fellow, so I’m careful to reach out very slowly when I pet him, and I don’t do it all the time. But when I do, he seems to enjoy it. He often climbs over me to get to the other side of the room. And when he’s had enough, he goes back into his house and settles in.

So, as I said, I was curious to know what Bacon does when I’m not there. Luckily, Lisa, one of the ladies who work at Tabby’s Place, sent me some photos of Bacon.

He waits for his dinner by the door on those days when he’s particularly hungry.

He sleeps soundly and dreams very sweet dreams on his new mega-sized bed.

All in all, considering everything, the kid has a good life. He’s well-loved, and everyone keeps a special eye on him.

Bacon and I, as usual, want to thank you for your continued generosity. We are both well aware that Tabby’s Place is a very special place, but it relies on the support of kind and generous humans like you. Have a wonderful February and a fantastic Valentine’s Day!
