Update for Bacon

The little ferocious lion

Dear Supporters of Bacon,

When I arrive to see Bacon this morning, I’m again struck by all the signs of warning on the door leading into the Medical Office where he lives. Because of Bacon’s unique medical condition, he is better off if he can stay calm. A nice, quiet environment is his best friend. He has his own suite. Volunteers no longer clean his house. The staff does it, just to ensure that the protocols are followed exactly—there is no banging or clanging.

I know this, of course. That’s why everyone is asked to stay out—except for the staff.

But if you don’t know Bacon’s situation, you would think Bacon must be some ferocious cat, maybe part tiger or leopard, who for some reason has taken up residence at Tabby’s Place. You might think those warning signs are to protect you—the visitor. In some sense, yes, Bacon’s behavior can be a bit unpredictable, but I feel sorry for all the visitors who never have the chance to interact with this sweet little boy.

Getting up close and personal

You do have to move slowly. Let him sniff you. Let him circle around you a few times to feel comfortable, but after that, he somehow finds a way to connect. I’ve learned to let him make the first move. He walks by and rubs his body against my leg. He comes very close and puts his face against mine. Sometimes he even crawls over me to get to the other side.

This morning, when I stopped by before starting my shift, I spied a bag full of treats. As soon as I picked up the bag, a very crinkly-sounding bag, Bacon’s ears perked up. Before I knew it, he was nudging my hand and eating some treats out of my palm. It gave me a wonderful opportunity to pet him around his neck. He seemed happy and content.

I just want a little love

Finally, I put some treats in his bowl and he scoffed them up in a flash.

I also heard an adoring fan sent Bacon a “ripple rug.” (Thank you for this very generous gift!) Curious as always, Bacon set about investigating it—very tentatively—and luckily, we have the video showing our sweet boy in action. Investigator Bacon at your service:

Is somebody, anybody in there?

And, we also have some not to miss photos of Investigator Bacon doing his thing with the ripple rug.

There’s got to be more treats somewhere . . . anywhere!:

Although Bacon continues to have seizures once in a while, the general consensus is that he is settling nicely into his new digs in the Medical Office. Yeah!!

As always, Bacon and I thank you for your continued generosity. We hope you can take advantage of these beautiful sunny autumn days and the lovely turning of the leaves.

Your correspondent,
Kate

Are those treats for me?
