Dear Supporters of Bacon,

As I crossed the parking lot to enter Tabby’s Place this morning, thoughts were racing through my mind. Since I wanted to visit Bacon, I had to find someone who could help me put Marcia back into her cozy cage before I attempted to open up Bacon’s. I also reminded myself not to forget the treats. I needed some sure proof way of luring Bacon back into his home once the visit was concluded. I sauntered past Karina’s office, intent on my mission, and stopped. Better to peek in first to make sure the office had been cleaned so I wouldn’t be disturbing the routine.
What? To my surprise . . . Marcia was already in her cage and Bacon’s mesh cage was wide open. Bacon sat, serenely surveying the room, looking as if he were deciding what he wanted to do—stay in or go out.
I was in luck.

I walked into the room and plopped on the floor a few feet from Bacon’s cage. At first, he only stared, but he couldn’t resist. Within half a minute, he climbed out of his cage and slowly made his way towards me, smelling my sneakers, winding his way all the way around me in a circle. As usual, I stayed perfectly still, knowing instinctively it wasn’t time to reach out and pet him or make any kind of physical contact.
He looked as if he were going back to his cage, but he stopped and turned, making another complete loop around me. This time he slowed when he reached Marcia. He leaned forward and sniffed. She leaned in also. And I thought, “Maybe one of them will meow or growl,” but nobody said a word.

On the third loop, Bacon came within a hair’s breadth, and his face almost touched mine. “I’d like to get to know you,” I whispered, not too loud. But he turned and finished his loop. I glanced behind me and Marcia was watching everything. “I can’t explain it,” I said to her. “I have no idea what he’s trying to say.”

There was a poster hanging on the wall near her cage—Vote Bacon for Congress. Well, full disclosure it says—Vote Roger Bacon for Congress. Someone here at Tabby’s Place has a sense of humor. Maybe everyone is getting into the patriotic spirit—getting ready to celebrate July 4!
Finally, Bacon nestled into his cage. Lucky for me, as I’d forgotten to bring treats.
Despite the fact that Bacon does continue to have seizures (mostly at night while he is resting I was told), he had a good month health-wise.

It was time to say goodbye until my next visit. Bacon and I want to thank you, as always, for your continued generosity to Tabby’s Place. We hope you have a lovely (not too hot) month of July.
