Dear Friends of Bacon,
Our favorite quirky gray kitty has been feeling a little extra spunky this month. Maybe it’s his way of saying that spring is right around the corner.
We know that not much changes in Bacon’s world from day to day, and such consistency is carefully designed to promote his overall well being. Consistency also allows the behavior and medical teams to carefully monitor even the smallest changes or note little patterns.
While Tabby’s Place once used clipboards for noting non-emergency medical observations and cat behavior notes, we began using Slack for internal communications between the staff and between the volunteers and staff. Now any one of us can quickly note an observation when it happens and don’t have to remember to go write it down on the appropriate clipboard. Notes in Slack are easily searchable, which means that I can quickly look for notes on Bacon and see any patterns.

I’ve noticed that the days that Bacon vomits after eating are often followed by a noted seizure. The medical team recently adjusted his anti-nausea medication because he was vomiting his food more frequently.
Bacon has had several seizures this month and at least two of those were preceded by one or two episodes of vomiting several hours before the seizure. Since only those in the room with Bacon are able to observe his seizures and there is not a staff member working in the office every day, we can only assume that he experiences them more often than we observe.
There was a recent afternoon when Bacon was very excited for his dinner and was “hopping” around in anticipation. On another evening he became highly interested in licking the pant legs of the staff member working at the desk. During the licking, he allowed some gentle pets down his back. Bacon is indeed an odd cat.

But perhaps the most problematic behavior episode this month was the day that he bit one of the sanctuary associates on her back while she was cleaning out his crate. We have no idea what prompted this particular outburst, but he vomited the same day and was noted to have some redness around his left eye.
Thank you for your continued support of dear Bacon. All the individualized attention that he gets each day would not be possible without you!
