Update for Bacon

Dear Friends of Bacon,

The weather in Ringoes, NJ has taken a noticeable turn toward autumn. The leaves are falling and turning lovely colors, and things are transforming at Tabby’s Place too. Our building expansion has a roof!

Our quirky Bacon remains oblivious to all of this as his days generally proceed according to a pattern without interruption. But the past month was a little bit different for Bacon.

First of all, Bacon was sedated for bloodwork and a grooming session. The vet team has decided that every six months Bacon will be sedated and thoroughly groomed so that we don’t have to bother him with this when he is awake. Grooming generally causes him great stress. He is looking very tidy these days.

Secondly, the vet team added an anti-nausea medication to Bacon’s daily medications. Our gray guy has been vomiting more frequently, and since Bacon gets his medications in his food, it is essential that he keep these down.

But the most exciting thing that happened for Bacon this month was that he and Fenek were invited to interact without the barrier of a crate. For quite some time, each boy has shown great interest in the other. They talk and sniff through their respective crates. So, under close supervision from their human officemate, Bacon and Fenek were allowed to be out in the room at the same time. Bacon was well behaved for these experiments, but Fenek was a little too eager to engage.

On one occasion, Fenek tried to engage Bacon in “play,” but this was more than Bacon was ready to do. You can witness the interaction by watching here. During another test, Fenek followed Bacon around the room while sniffing his rear end. This was a bit much for Bacon, who got agitated. It is clear that Bacon is not ready to return to full-time sharing of a space, but we will continue to monitor their interactions and hope that Fenek can calm his enthusiasm and allow Bacon to acclimate to having a relationship out in the open space.

The special care that Bacon receives each day would not be possible without your loving support. In this season of Thanksgiving, I want to personally thank you for all you do for Bacon each and every month.
