Update for Bacon

Hello again, friends of Bacon!

I’m happy to report that our favorite stylishly ruffled fella continues to do well.  He’s had a pretty normal month—though “normal” for Bacon isn’t entirely normal, as we all know.  Bacon still experiences occasional seizures despite his medication.  By this point, the wonderful Tabby’s Place staff is familiar enough with his condition that they are able to manage these, and usually they aren’t severe enough to need anything more than a watchful eye and some sympathy.

But while Bacon gets sympathy from the humans…his feline roommate is another story!  Our Volunteer Coordinator Karina (in whose office Bacon makes his home) witnessed his feline office-mate Sally run up to poor Bacon’s cage and bop him on the head during one of his seizures!  Maybe she was trying to help?  Wake him up?  Show him her stylish claw caps?  Maybe she was just jealous of anybody but her getting Karina’s attention?  We can only speculate.

In Sally’s defense, she has just started chemotherapy for recently-diagnosed cancer, so it’s not hard to understand her being a bit extra prickly.  And fortunately, Karina was there and everybody is just fine.

Other than his intermittent seizures, Bacon’s only health issue of late has been a bout of the upper respiratory distress that’s been working its way through the halls of Tabby’s Place.  You might not expect it, but a cat sanctuary is not unlike an office in that way.  When somebody gets sick, everybody gets sick!  And despite the best efforts of the staff and volunteers in making sure all our cats live in a clean and safe environment (washing hands constantly!), sometimes everyone just gets a cold.  I’m happy to say that Bacon only suffered some congestion and is now his normal chirping self.

He’s even got the exploring bug!  Bacon likes to hang out right behind the office door so he can listen in on what the humans are doing outside, and recently he slipped past our Executive Director Jonathan to check out the big wide world.

Here’s what Jonathan says happened: “Bacon slipped out of the office recently when I was removing his dirty litter box.  My hands we full, so Danielle, just coming out of her office, decided to restrain him with a towel.  Bad idea.  He popped and bounced so much that she gave up, and we slowly urged him back into the office.  Like trying to scoop up mercury (for those who remember when it wasn’t dangerous, but fascinating).”

Remember how I told you that, if you touch Bacon unexpectedly, he tends to hop and scamper away?  Given my experience, I can imagine that trying to wrap him in a towel was something like trying to catch several super high-bounce balls while wearing oven gloves.  It’s never a dull day at Tabby’s Place.

And that’s all the news that’s fit to print!  Bacon and I will see you again next month.

Your correspondent,
Tara
