Update for Bacon

Dear Supporters of Bacon,

The year is rolling on, and Bacon and I are hoping you’re finding ways to keep warm and comfy in this too-cold weather. When Bacon gets wind of a snowstorm or the wind chill factor, his typical response is to cuddle up in his comfortable bed and take another snooze. Ah, the life of a cat!

The other day, when I was at Tabby’s Place doing my usual volunteering, I popped in (as usual) to say hello to our handsome boy. Well, I thought. Here he was, resting/sleeping/cat napping on his bed. But there on the floor—I couldn’t quite believe it—was a slew of snacks scattered all around.

Is this Bacon living his best life? Did his fairy godmother arrive and gift him way too many snacks to eat? Or did he break into the snack bag, grab it in his paws, and just dump all the contents on the floor? A mystery, to be sure.

Snacks and more snacks!

Of course, inquiring minds have to know. “Bacon, what is it with all these snacks?”

He gave me the cutest yawn.

“Bacon, I see about twenty snacks on the floor. Do you know anything about that?”

You know cats as well as I do. They rarely admit to anything. When asked a question, they pretend they have a sudden urge to groom, or look around, or go for a drink of water, or run across the room. Bacon did none of this, but he didn’t answer the question, either.

I looked around the room for the bag of snacks. If it was open, I thought, I would have my answer. I couldn’t find the bag.

I plead the Fifth.

I decided to change the subject. “Valentine’s Day is coming up. Anyone special I should know about?”

Now awake, he stared at me as if to say, you’re a really nice volunteer, but if you think I’m going to tell you who I’m sweet on, who I’m willing to share my snacks with…

Okay, okay.

In other news, Bacon has had some medical ups and downs this month. As you might remember, the staff has been monitoring Bacon at night to keep an eye on his seizures. Previously, he was having three to four seizures a night, but his new medication has brought that down to one. Yay!

However, January did bring one particularly difficult day for our boy. Bacon has been once again picky with eating his wet food, where all his meds are hidden. One night, he ate so poorly that he didn’t get his meds, and he had a long and violent seizure. Fortunately, this was witnessed by a staff member working in the Foster Team Office, who could be there for him until it passed. He was okay, but what happened illustrates the complexity of working with cats and how committed the staff at Tabby’s Place is. We can’t thank you enough for making this tender, skilled care possible for him.

Meanwhile, a major snowstorm brought its own challenges. A foot of snow prevented many volunteers from coming in, so the Tabby’s Place staff devised a plan for a small crew to stay overnight (some staying two nights!) to ensure the cats were taken care of. Kudos to all the people who care so much!

Bacon and I thank you, as always, for your commitment to Tabby’s Place. Your generosity is much appreciated. Know that it is my honor to visit and write for Bacon.

Your correspondent,
Kate

P.S. I never did find out where all those snacks came from!
