Update for Anastasia

Greetings to Ana’s supporters,

With last month’s crisis behind her, Ana is doing quite well. She’s been gulping less, so we’ve been able to decrease her steroid dose from twice daily to just once daily. This is great news, as we never want any kitty to be on more steroids than she needs. Long-term use of steroids can have a number of undesirable side-effects. For one, it can cause a cat’s blood glucose level to become chronically elevated, requiring insulin. We wouldn’t want little Ana to ever have to deal with steroid-induced diabetes.

This month, several staff members have noted Ana’s “big belly.” Fortunately, that’s a happy belly, full of food. She’s gained 1.3 pounds in just 3 weeks, so we’ve discontinued her appetite stimulant. We’ve also discontinued Ana’s antibiotics, as last month’s coughing has ceased.

And, on the social front, Ana’s proud that she’s not the one causing a stir in the Special Needs suite this month – that would be her rabble-rousing new neighbor Beatrice, who’s been picking a few fights with Ana and Hootz.

Ana seemed to be under the weather when I saw her yesterday. She had been curled up in a small carrier most of the day. She was happy to purr for me but wasn’t interested in coming out.

She had been quite friendly and more like her usual self when I saw her the previous week. Here’s hoping that nothing serious is wrong, just a sleepy day – or perhaps a run-in with Bea.

Ana sends you a holiday purr and thanks you for your continuing support.
