Update for Adelaide

Happy July, Team Adelaide.

Well, let’s start with the annoying news and get it behind us. Apparently — and I’d be skeptical if it wasn’t coming from such a reliable source — Adelaide…is…old.

I know. I’m having a hard time buying it, too.

But that’s the word from our illustrious vet team. And, they have a strong corroborating witness in Adelaide’s own kidneys. It seems our tiny girl has gotten a tad tinier this month, losing ounces she’s better off keeping. Our vet suspects Adelaide’s chronic kidney disease is to blame. But, Addy is otherwise in outstanding health, and there’s no reason to believe anything serious is afoot, so we’re officially not worrying.

OK. Now we can get on to the real business of Adelaide’s awesomeness.

This time of year, there’s plenty of talk about how much animals hate fireworks. I suppose that’s true, as far as it goes, and I’m grateful Tabby’s Place is located in such a rural, not-even-one-horse town that there are no big booms in earshot. But I’m also convinced that, even if the entire Macy’s fireworks extravaganza were exploding overhead, Adelaide would be as happy as a lark.

Speaking of which, the expression should be changed. When people see happy larks, they say, “I do declare, that bird is as happy as an Adelaide.” But I digress.

Our girl is simply unflappable, come cats or kids or Roman candles. New neighbors (e.g. Dwayne, Chachi) arrive; Adelaide yawns. Visitors appear; Adelaide gleefully launches into their laps.

The world froths and lurges from crisis to election to commotions of all kinds; Adelaide remains serene.

Adelaide, then, is an oasis for all of us in the midst of madness.

After all she’s been through — and we only know the thinnest fraction of her 15 years — you’d think Adelaide would be an anxious individual. She’d come by any agita honestly. But, no; she exists simply to give and receive love, soothing us with her very self. And, take it from me; nothing soothes quite like a lapful of Adelaide.

Better yet, don’t take it from me. Come and visit and hold Addy yourself. I am 100% certain she will sit in your lap until you are a puddle of blissed-out goo.

But, dear ones, even if you can’t visit in person, please know that you are here with Adelaide every day. Through weight bobbles and kidney conundrums and human-healing sessions, you are a constant in Addy’s life, helping to keep her happy, healthy and so very serene.

Now, I’m off to go sit in Adelaide’s solarium and bask in her bliss. I’ll give her a kiss for you, too.
