Special Update for the FeLV Fund

Dear Sponsors,

I have some very sad news to relate: we’ve lost our dear Abacus.

He’d suddenly started doing poorly just over a week ago. When he developed a poor appetite, we became concerned.

Last Saturday morning, he hadn’t eaten anything overnight, continued to refuse food, and spiked a very high fever. We hospitalized him immediately, and gave him IV fluids, antibiotics, and pain medication.

Our vet team took X-rays and checked for anemia, but neither test provided us with further information. We suspected that the feline leukemia virus had migrated into his bone marrow.

Abacus’s symptoms continued to multiply, including a low platelet count and blood in his urine, and we couldn’t get rid of his fever. In the end, we exhausted every avenue available, but he simply was not improving. Even worse than losing him was the thought of having him suffer.

Right up to “goodbye,” Abacus relished the friendship of cats and people alike. This morning, our vet team gave him a boost of pain medication so he could spend one last sunny day basking in Trifecta’s affection. A steady stream of staff and volunteers arrived to lavish him with love.

Our boy left this world surrounded by a circle of friends. No — make that family. And you, dear sponsors, will forever be Abacus’ family, too.

I’ll miss his famous “Abacus Attitude” very much, just as I’ll miss his knack of always finding that one sunny spot to nap in.

Many thanks for supporting us in caring for our sweet boy and all our beloved FeLVies.

Your correspondent,
Stephanie
