Skittles
Skittles – that colorful, fun candy that no one can seem to resist – is the perfect name for this sweet little bundle. And even though many staff and volunteers have gotten to know her in the two years she’s been in other suites in Tabby’s Place, she’s really blossomed into her own since moving into the staff and volunteer lounge this spring. Lounge living suits Skittles just fine, as it provides her with direct and frequent access to her human fan club.
You may not guess it to look at our robust and happy girl now, but Skittles was desperately ill when she first arrived at Tabby’s Place from a crowded shelter two years ago. In fact, we feared she might not survive. Fortunately, a visit to the emergency vet and ’round-the-clock care saved Skittles’ life, and it’s been our privilege to provide for her needs ever since.
During that initial crisis, Skittles was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD. IBD describes a group of chronic gastrointestinal disorders, characterized by redness and irritation of the digestive tract. The cause of IBD is unknown, but many researchers suspect that it is an auto-immune disease.
We treat Skittles with a special hypoallergenic diet, as well as an antibiotic and a steroid. We’re glad to say that Skittles’ regimen is doing a good job of keeping our girl stable, and today 12-year-old Skittles is feeling great.
Volunteers and staff aren’t the only beings to love this little girl. Roomie Mittens is one of Skittles’ favorite felines, and the two are often seen snoozing with their tails touching on the couch. Skittles, Mittens and fellow lounge-mate Raja all have IBD, and they share a special hypoallergenic cuisine that helps maintain the status quo in their tummies. As you can see, Skittles is a full-figured feline, and has no qualms about eating this special food.
Please become a sweet part of Skittles’ life as her loving sponsor. Your kindness will help make a truly delicious life possible for our gentle girl.
