In the span of a year, striking raven-black Michael has gone from a desperately frightened bundle of nerves to a snuggle-loving volunteer favorite. Approach Michael slowly and gently, begin petting his silky coat, and he’ll soon be very happy, purring and “making biscuits”. While Michael is still timid, he appreciates affection, and it’s a pleasure to see him blossom and grow to trust us.

Previously, Michael had lived in a cage for an extended period, which could make any feline to be cautious and timid.Perhaps Michael was also embarrassed by a case of mistaken identities: his previous caretakers had called him “Maggie,” thinking he was female. We clarified that situation quickly, and gave Michael his new name. With a new life in a large, open suite and a raft of feline and human friends, Michael’s life has only gotten better in the past year.

So why is this charming fellow still waiting for an adoptive home?Michael has feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Once a cat is infected with FIV, he is infected for life and can give the virus to other cats via saliva transmitted through biting.

FIV disables or destroys white blood cells and leaves a cat susceptible to infections. Overall, a very small percentage of cats are found to be FIV+, and many of those diagnosed with this virus will live long and healthy lives so long as they receive top notch medical treatment. While Michael’s FIV+ status would likely put him on the short list for euthanasia at a public shelter, at Tabby’s Place he enjoys the sweet life in Suite FIV. Like all of our suites, the FIV+ suite is designed to facilitate cleaning and a disease-free environment. We are especially vigilant about disease control procedures in this suite. In addition, Michael and his FIV+ friends receive frequent examinations from our veterinarians. As for frequent affection, that’s just a given at Tabby’s Place.

In addition to FIV, Michael has a torn Achilles tendon. This is little more than a minor inconvenience and there is no reason to pursue surgery, as Michael is probably a little too short for the NBA, anyway.Besides, he’d rather knead his blanket and play with his much-loved toys than shoot hoops.
