Frankie

Frankie

Frankie is an adorable, seven-year-old Siamese mix.He came to us from a collector’s home that contained about 80 cats at one time.A handful of resuce organizations worked to find the cats new homes, but nobody was willing to take Frankie because he has megacolon.Megacolon is a condition in which the cat’s colon and rectum become distended, which affects motility and the ability to pass stool.Cats with megacolon are prone to constipation and can become obstipated (severely constipated) and require frequent enemas.Megacolon can be quite problematic and become debilitating, even requiring surgery.

Frankie’s medical history did not show any traumas or deformities that would explain his disease.Indeed, most of the time, there is no known cause for megacolon in cats.Frankie1.jpgTreatment of megacolon can be difficult and frustrating.Special diets (high in fiber) work for some cats.In Frankie’s case, it appears that his condition has been well controlled through the use of two drugs. One drug draws moisture into the colon. The other drug helps increase the motility of his colon. Both of these drugs make it easier for Frankie to pass stool.

You might notice that Frankie’s eyes don’t look quite right in the photo to the left. This is because he has some corneal scars in one eye and a prolapsed iris (part of the iris has leaked out of its container) in the other. These are rather minor problems that currently require no treatment, but we will need to examine him regularly to make sure these conditions don’t progress.Despite these conditions, Frankie’s blue eyes are striking.Frankie2.jpgWe’ve only had Frankie for a few weeks and we are happy that his condition appears to be regulated well so far on his drug regimen.Frankie is an extremely attractive and sweet cat who wants only to be cuddled and loved. We hope he will be adopted one day. But, we are aware that his medical condition greatly reduces his chances. Please sponsor Frankie and help us to care for him as he needs and deserves.
