Barley

Barley

The first thing you see when you look at Barley is that colossal grey head. With a massive mane and a strong jaw, Barley is every inch the lion – from the front, anyway.

But the moment Barley turns his head, you see another story: our long-haired love is a petite little old man, with no tail. Comical and cute as can be, it seems all of Barley’s size is concentrated in his furry face.

What he lacks in size, Barley makes up in personality. Our senior sweetie is not about to let age keep him from frolicking in the presence of a friend. Pet Barley for 30 seconds, and he’ll put on his best and giddiest show for you, rearing up on his hind legs like a pony and pressing his fuzzy face deep into yours.

So how in the world is such a mush-mouse not already adopted? Barley is, in the words of one of his favorite staff members, a “hot mess.” Poor Barley is dripping and dropping from every orifice on his handsome face. Not one to do anything on a small scale, Barley has severe chronic rhinitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose), otitis (inflammation or infection of the ear) and lymphocytic plasmocytic gingivitis (also known as LPS, an autoimmune disease of the mouth and throat tissues).

Prior to finding sanctuary at Tabby’s Place, Barley been abandoned by his owner in a cold barn, and it was clear he’d gone without veterinary care for quite some time. We were optimistic that his various “itis”es would clear up quickly – but this was not to be.

Each issue in Barley’s grab bag of inflammatory diseases is unfortunately quite severe. Together, they mean that sweet Barley requires extensive daily medication to stay comfortable and healthy. In addition to ear medication and antibiotics, Barley requires an anti-inflammatory immune suppressive agent. Since this particular drug, while highly effective at treating Barley’s conditions, also reduces his immunity, we need to be especially vigilant about monitoring Barley for any infectious disease.

Despite the many snuffles and struggles h”s faced, the cloud-colored cat radiates solid sunshine to all who meet him. Barley’s best days are undoubtedly ahead. With his irresistible affection, he’s doing his best to snuggle his way into a forever home. But, we know that Barley’s many medical issues mean that will have to be a very special adopter. In the meantime, you can cherish Barley with your generous sponsorship.
